Reception PE in vest and pants?

Is this normal? We've had very little info about anything from the school, but info about uniform / PE kit says shorts etc. for older kids and reception will do PE in vest and pants. I feel like it's a bit undignified and am thinking of giving DD a little pair of shorts to wear. She can dress / undress herself. But I don't know if I'm just being daft. Friends (including primary teachers) seem a bit puzzles by it and think it's a bit outdated.

Blimey, I remember dressing like that in the mid seventies for PE!

mrz · 29/08/2012 16:54

It's probably because it's quicker and easier than getting changed in and out of PE kit

vodkaanddietirnbru · 29/08/2012 16:59

ours take off their trousers/skirts and put on a pair of shorts but keep their polo shirts on. Neither of mine wear a vest so would end up topless at your school!!

As a reception teacher I've discovered happy naked children "ready" for PE and had to frantically search for spare kits.

DeWe · 29/08/2012 18:59

Mrz that would be my ds Grin Or alternatively he used to put his entire PE kit over the top of his uniform. He'd be thrilled at just pants and vests.

mrz · 29/08/2012 19:04

I've had swimmers put their clothes on top of their wet swim suit because mum sent them to school in swimming gear for ease ...

Pinkflipflop · 29/08/2012 19:14

I don't think it is appropriate to have children doing PE in their vests and pants.

I wouldnt allow my child to do it, just send a PE kit and insist that she is to wear it.

noramum · 29/08/2012 19:16

As DD hardly ever wears vests and if only the strappy kind it would be hugely embarrassing.

What is so difficult to change into a T-Shirt and shorts?

exoticfruits · 29/08/2012 19:16

It is a lot simpler not to have to deal with an extra set. Some places just have vest and pants. I can't see why it matters at the age of 4/5 years.

exoticfruits · 29/08/2012 19:17

You obviously haven't had to have a whole reception class to get changed noramum or you would know!

bulby · 29/08/2012 19:18

I'm really shocked that people have an issue with reception children doing pe in vest and knickers. Can I ask why? I genuinely wouldn't bat an eyelid if dd did. Neither would she, but as the child who strips at any given opportunity she might not feel the same as many other children Smile.

mrz · 29/08/2012 19:21

Would you allow your child to wear a swim suit to play in a paddling pool outdoors?

oneofthosedays · 29/08/2012 19:22

At ours they initially get them getting used to putting their pumps on and doing pe in uniform. They then get them putting shorts on as well and by the end of reception theu are getting fully changed. Most schools in our area do this, seems a bit cruel to have them doing pe in undies and vest and there will be kids who don't wear vests.

EcoLady · 29/08/2012 19:23

I'm another one of an age when we did PE in vest and pants all the way through Primary school. Puberty happened later then, it really did.

Younger children have no qualms at all about stripping off. It's not until about yr 4 that the girls suddenly start to become aware that not everyone is quite at the same stage any more.

exoticfruits · 29/08/2012 19:33

They will all be happily wandering around in vest and pants as they get changed anyway.

Llareggub · 29/08/2012 19:37

My DNs go to a school where reception and KS1 wear joggers to school, thereby overcoming the whole changing for PE thing. Seems sensible to me.

exoticfruits · 29/08/2012 19:39

Anything to make it easy Llareggub. The DCs are never bothered whatever at that age.

exoticfruits · 29/08/2012 19:40

I would ban ties and lace up shoes at that age.

Pooka · 29/08/2012 19:41

Why would a 4/5 year old be embarrassed by wearing a vest for pe noramum? Even a 'strappy' one?

None of my dcs would have been bothered. Only downside is potential peer pressure for more interesting undies, pants with characters on and so on.

exoticfruits · 29/08/2012 19:44

They are not embarrassed. It is easy enough to keep a few spare vests in case they haven't one-if they have PE kit there will be far more who don't have it.

workshy · 29/08/2012 19:47

we wore vest and pants in infant school in the early 80s and I can still remember being mortified!

some DCs are just more private than others

exoticfruits · 29/08/2012 20:17

Or maybe they have mothers who make them feel like that.

workshy · 29/08/2012 20:24

or maybe, everyone is different? Hmm

my brother and sister would happily wander round in pants, I never would

Pinkflipflop · 29/08/2012 20:24

Sorry but it think it is creepy and odd to have children doing PE in their vest and pants. I am a teacher and it specifically says on the curriculum that a part of PE is getting changed.

We have visitors coming through our hall all the time, PE included and I just would not feel comfortable with my class in underwear. It's weird!

Pinkflipflop · 29/08/2012 20:25

Also remember having to do this at school and even in Y1 I was mortified!
