Data handling for year 4 - The Tudors - any ideas please?

Does anyone have any ideas for this?

I need a numeracy activity, data handling, that will tie in with the topic of the Tudors.

Had thought along the lines of how long was Henry viii married to each wife and plot this on a chart but I can't think how to extend this to freqency tables, tally charts etc.

Any thoughts?

Help would be greatly appreciated!

How long Henry was married to each wife would be tough as he was married to Katherine of Aragon for over 30 years but to Anne of Cleves for only a few months so the scale would be really tricky.

Could you just get them to do a survey of their favourite tudor monarch, do a tally, frequency table and bar chart of the results?

Yes, I was worried about the scale. Do you think favourite tudor monarch survey would be advanced enough for y4? I really like this idea though and the way it easily links to lots of pieces of work!
Thanks so much for the reply!

What about a tally chart on reasons why they think Henry married so many times? Favourite wife? Then do bar chart etc.

They could then pose/answer questions about the data.

I like that idea too MrsLovely!

Thank you!

I'm a secondary maths teacher and might do something like this with a bottom set Y7. They all think they know how to do bar charts but invariably mess something up.

Things to concentrate on:

  1. drawn with pencil and ruler
  2. correctly labelled axes with a sensible scale
  3. title for bar chart describing what it's about and titles for the axes
  4. equal sized gaps between columns
  5. equal width columns (getting them to label vertically helps)
  6. accurate heights

I would draw a rubbish bar chart on the board first and get them to point out all the things that are wrong with it, then produce the above list to reference as they construct their chart. IME some still get it wrong!

Apologies if teaching to suck eggs, I got a bit carried away Blush

Hi Pinkflipflop:

You can have a great measuring homework based on Henry VIII.

According to this Daily Mail article www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1134222/King-size-Henry-VIIIs-armour-reveals-52in-girth--paid-terrible-price.html Henry the VIII was 6 foot 1 inch tall and by the end of his life had a 52 inch waist.

Get all the children to measure their father's height and waist. Then together in class you can work together to record the data and create a graph of the results. You all should be able to work out who's father is closest to Henry VIII in size.

Spice it up by offering one of those packs of chocolates (Henry & his 6 wives) the Historic palaces shops are always selling www.historicroyalpalaces.com/henry-and-his-wives-chocolates.html to the child with the father of closest height or waist size.

PastSellByDate - I think that's a horrible idea!

How would you feel if you were being measured (assuming you aren't a dad) and finding out you were perhaps the nearest to Huge Henry's waist size? Or if you were the child who's dad was the nearest?

Hi Downy:

First can I stress this was just an idea.

Second can I stress that the Mum's loved that the Dad's HAD TO HELP that week - it's usually us Mums.

I think it may depend on the class - in this case the fathers were all around the same girth, just different heights.

Fathers in that year were all about the same size - winner was 6'2" with a waist of 44 inches. He was not the only father with that waist size but was one of the shorter fathers.

Like all these things - it's dependent on the group of people involved. For that year and that class it was just a lot of fun.

HTH.
