Boys school shoes with flashing lights!

Nonky · 18/08/2012 09:09

Hello my son is desperate for school shoes with flashing lights. Normally I would say no and get him some that without as they would probably be cheaper but it is his first year at school and I'm trying to make it as positive experience as I can (for us all!). I find clarkes shoes poor quality and can't seem to find any flashing shoes by other brands. Does anyone have any links to some please? Many thanks!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo - can you imagine!!! In assembly, turn out the lights, watch the film, 200 kids with flashing shoes - whatever next!! or is this a wind up???? Hmm

BedHog · 18/08/2012 09:13

Check out Skechers, not sure if any would be suitable for school, but lots of them flash!

ChuggaChuggaChooChoo · 18/08/2012 09:13

Any school with any sense is going to have flashing-lights-in-shoes one of the things on the "forbidden" list anyway.

Nonky · 18/08/2012 09:14

I'm a teacher. Children have had flashing shoes for the last 10 years. It is not a wind up. Anyway, how often do they all sit in the hall watching films??? Not in my school

am I right in thinking they have a button that you can turn them on and off?

Nonky · 18/08/2012 09:16

Yes they do. Thank you for the nice replies Wink

DD1's new shoes have lights. They can fuck right off if they object. I've spent enough fulfilling their endless uniform requests.

MissKeithLemon · 18/08/2012 09:16

ByTheWay - not a wind up! My ds used to love his Grin

Nonky - I second skechers if the budger will stretch to them, they are pretty sturdy for school shoes ime

savoycabbage · 18/08/2012 09:17

I would have to say I don't think it's a good idea. Imagine him getting up in assembly to collect an award with his feet flashing away.

When I could only get flashing light trainers for my skinny footed Minnie I dissected them to stop them flashingGrin

notapizzaeater · 18/08/2012 09:19

Skechers are brilliant, amazon sometimes have good deals on them ...

I love the flashing lights in winter when you are walking home in the dark, cars can spot them.

Iirc you actually have to be walking for them to flash

Nonky · 18/08/2012 09:21

I have to say i am amazed by the negative responses!!! Thanks to the positive ones Smile as I said earlier I am a primary school teacher and so is my husband. For over 10 years children have been wearing these. I have never worked in a school where they have been 'forbidden'???!!!! So what if his shoes flash when he goes up to collect a reward. I'll just be proud that he has done so well. Any school that has a problem with a 5 year old that has shoes like that wouldn't be one I'd want my children going to!!!

If there's a Skechers outlet store near you they are usually a bit cheaper, plus they have 'buy one get another pair half price' offers so you can get the next size up at the same time and save some money.

porthcurnick · 18/08/2012 09:28

Mine have had flashing ones some years, as you say nonky never heard anything about them being forbidden and the school has quite a strict uniform policy. The lights aren't very bright anyway.

Last year they had ones with a button so you could turn the lights off, but they were clarks.

snowball3 · 18/08/2012 09:32

The battery soon wears out!

porthcurnick · 18/08/2012 09:39

Have you got an independent shoe shop nearby? That's where I go then they should have clarks, startrite, and other brands, much better servce than the clarks shops.

Nonky · 18/08/2012 09:40

Brilliant ideas thank you. I will check them all out. Many thanks for the advice - just hope i'm not going to be alienated at the school gates by all the anti flashing mothers out there Wink

Surprised by the negativity.

Most children change into plimsolls at school from what I can see. Shoes are just for the walk to and from school and with winter mornings and nights soon upon us I really don't understand the objection. They only flash when walking so no problem in a school hall during a film.

Schechers used to be good for these. I don't know whether they're still in vogue or not, but Clarks, Brantano should do them.

ByTheWay1 · 18/08/2012 09:56

My response is only negative because I personally feel they should not be allowed in schools. Just an opinion....

The point of uniform is that the kids all wear the same. My girls had flashing trainers for use at and outside home. If they had asked for school shoes that flash, my response would have been a plain "No, the uniform guide says plain black school shoes".

I guess I just see it as another distraction, the kids in our reception classes usually end up without shoes in class by the end of the first week anyhow - the velcro orchestra at carpet time sees to that... (we wondered why the kids had to get their shoes from their trays at the end of the day :0) )

whatsleep · 18/08/2012 10:06

If you have a brantano near to you? they are worth a look, lots of if different brands so bound to be something suitable.

MummytoLB · 18/08/2012 16:15

DD is starting Year 1 in September and the school uniform clearly states plain black shoes. I've found it really difficult to find any that are completely plain (most have a black embroidered pattern), but i've stuck with what was written in the prospectus.
I'd say, if there is nothing in the school rules about flashing shoes then go for it - your DS would obviously love it Smile

CouthyMow · 19/08/2012 00:46

Our school uniform rules state no flashing lights. If a child wears them to school, they are made to remove them and wear plimsolls for the day, and the shoes are sent home but the parent will be called over to the teacher and told that they must not wear them again.

They DO state this very clearly in every Parents meeting for new starters though, and they always put a reminder in the last newsletter of the school year.

CouthyMow · 19/08/2012 00:48

Nope, our school wears their shoes all day unless they are doing PE, then they have to wear PLAIN (no logo's) black trainers for outdoor PE, or plain black plimsolls for indoor PE.

SkipTheLightFanjango · 19/08/2012 00:54

I got ds a paiir from Shoe zone. The lights could be switched off via a button on the tongue.

Sparkle32 · 19/08/2012 00:57

That sounds a bit strong. I've seen kids wearing kids wearing shoes with flashing lights 10 years now and I've never heard of a school banning them!
