Dd has her first pair of glasses. She is about to go to Y1.
She is fairly delicate so I'm not too worried about them being broken as such. fatal last words

Will she be guided to put them on and off? (she doesn't need them for PE yet)
Should I name them and the box?
Should I formally tell school in writing when what why she needs them?

Hints tips useful suggestions please. I want her to manage glasses herself so my reason to ask is from this perspective.

In our class the children who wear glasses keep them in a named case on their table. They bring them each morning and take them home each night. They have to remember to put them on but they are reminded if they forget.

dd has worn glasses since 18 months and wears them at school. She doesnt have a case with her and doesnt take them off even for PE. She doesnt need to be guided to take them on and off as she wears them all the time

I would think it depends how strong her prescription is. I've worn glasses since I was 2 and I kept them on for everything apart from swimming.

FallenCaryatid · 18/08/2012 08:05

I've always asked when the child needs to wear their glasses, and reminded them if they forget. Some children take theirs off for PE and playtime, some don't depending on the strength of the prescription and personal preference.
No need for a formal letter unless it's something out of the ordinary, eg not just for short/long sight. When I had infants, they kept the case in their tray or on my desk.

The teacher asked me on his first day whether he was to keep them on or not. His prescription wasn't strong but the hospital had said he must wear them at all times so I said to leave them on.

He's about to start year 2 now and hasn't needed them for about 8 months now so we has now been discharged by hospital.

Ds3 wears his all the time. He has a spare pair, in a case, in his tidy tray as he often sometimes forgets to put them on on the days I am working and Dad is puting him to school.

mrz · 18/08/2012 11:48

If you let the teacher know she needs to remove them for PE they will try to remember to remind her

My dc has worn glasses since they were 2 years old, and have an array of glasses:

normal everyday (normally on face, unless underneath someone's foot when fallen off due to play, these are the cheapest pair try to keep them as close to the free glasses as we can although normally cost in the range of £85 on top of the freebie, due to thining of bottle bottom lenses as they get bent on a fairly regular basis),

reading coloured lenses (they are kept in their case on the desk, to be used only when doing close work),

sports goggles (kept in pe bag, to stop black eyes and nose bleeds due to ball in face),

swimming goggles (kept in swimming bag for obvious reasons).

But my dc has a very strong prescription, and can't see without some sort of equipment on face!

The other children in class with glasses, just have a case and use as and when they need them.

I wore glasses at school at age 5 (a while ago, admittedly...). I wear them all the time but took them off for PE as I can manage without to some extent if I don't have to read. I don't remember my glasses case being labelled, but I also don't remember anyone else in my class wearing glasses...

doggus · 18/08/2012 15:02

Same as vodka, ds aged 5 never takes his off. He has never broken them at school, generally happens at home!

EcoLady · 18/08/2012 18:53

Get a spare pair that she keeps in their case in her school bag. In 7 years we've had only two badly damaged pairs - both times school rang to let us know, DD wore her spares and both times the opticians were able to bend the frames back into shape :-)

EustaciaVye · 19/08/2012 21:07

My dd wears them all the time. They are not labelled and she doesnt take a case in.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/08/2012 12:04

DS2 wears his all the time (just finished YR). I leave his glasses case in his bag just in case he takes them off. I have told the teachers that he does need them all the time but to use their judgement if they are doing something particularly energetic in PE. DS2 is pretty good about taking them off when he is fighting with his brother doing some enthusiastic activity.

Tgger · 25/08/2012 21:25

Hi there! DS is going into Y1, got his first glasses in March this year, he wears them all the time at school, takes them off for high apparutus in PE but that's it. When he first had them I spoke to his teacher about it, and I felt it good to have her on hand as support. DS has been brilliant with them, no breakages so far, and easier for him I think as he has them on pretty much all the time. To start with I was really good at making sure his glasses case was in his bag, and I still try to do this, but actually it doesn't matter for him as he wears them all the time or puts them somewhere safe. Tbh there so much part of him now that he is miffed if anyone asks him to take them off (as happened on holiday at soft play place- understandable). He also has a patch that he wears 4 hours a day at school in the morning- I sent a letter in with that to explain it and talked to the teacher too- again no problems- well none after the first day when he was very nervous about it (same with first day of glasses).

bluana · 27/08/2012 00:07

Mine has to wear them all the time. I did put this in writing at the beginning of reception. It's useful to let subsequent teachers know, as I haven't found the information gets passed on. She takes no case and no spares but I work 5 minutes down the road. If I didn't I'd leave a spare pair in her bookbag because they've been broken a few times. She keeps them on for PE.
