He says 2 tiny lines(as they look on a keyboard)are how they do them at school instead of the inverted commas I've always used.He is pulling a fast one isn't he or have things changed?

Don't think DS just finishing yr3 does them. Just writes he said hello. I've just found out that he also didn't know that a comma was suppose to finish under the line. Hoping yr4 brings a return to basics !

We always did two small lines when I was at school, though that was a long time ago now (I'm 28 now), no idea what it is now.

We do inverted commas (sixty six and ninety nine) but his school may well do lines

It's really annoying that so many reading books (e.g. ORT) put single quote marks, not speech marks. We use 66/99 as well, as it's such a good mnemonic.

crazygracieuk · 17/08/2012 14:48

He probably uses the lines because it's like that on a computer keyboard and in computer/book fonts.

DS uses 66/99 too but I've seen work from children higher up the school on the walls that have used the 2 lines you described. I don't think it really matters as long as they're using them appropriately

Hmm! Other things I have noticed children doing and swearing they have been taught - not indenting for a new paragraph, skipping a line instead. Not using a new paragraph when a new character is speaking. These are so commonplace I now assume they are acceptable usage.

Who decides these things anyway?
