I have a year to plan my application for primary PGDE. Any advice?

I'm going to apply to Dundee for a primary PGDE next September, to start the following year (2014) when ds starts P1. I'm 40, so don't really have too many chances to get it wrong. Now ds has started playgroup, I have a bit more time to put work in, but want to know what the best preparation might be.

My background is in English language, which I hope will help. I've been doing some OU science courses out of interest (have science A levels, but ages ago!) and wondered whether my next OU course should be maths or a foreign language; I want to do one, as it's a nice change of pace from being SAHM at the moment, but should also consider how it would look on application.

I'm chair of playgroup this year, which I hope will show some commitment to early years at the very least, and a bit of community spirit. I'm arranging to be a volunteer helper at dd's school for a couple of mornings a week for this year, and friends have said they'll arrange for me to observe at other schools of different types.

Is there anything really obvious I'm missing? No real option for Brownies/Cubs, etc.

Thanks

Oh, thank you! No, no real specialisms in Music/Sport/Art etc, which I think is one of the things making me twitchy - not sure how much I can achieve in that area. Hmm.

DD's headteacher today suggested things like philosophy in education, which I have studied at university, and which appeals to me in primary schools. I'll look again at TES - just seen an awful lot of good advice here (and it still feels more like home. will have to dive into TES properly!).
