Would you like to use a brand new school

hi. My DS could have chance to be in the first intake of a brand new primary school (being built for increased population). There would be 60 reception places.

Would you choose this? If not why not?

I'm hoping to hear lots of thoughts and tips of things to watch for. If you were the head teacher or governor what would you do to make it successful?

Thx

I wouldn't go out of my way to choose it or not choose it, I don't think. The real advantage would be that all the staff would be specially chosen, so would be very keen and enthusiastic. The disadvantage would be that you have no idea what you are getting.

I have friends who are moving their dc from an outstanding and lovely school where she is really happy to a brand-new free school that will be on a temporary site for a couple of years. That wouldn't work for me, but it's a bilingual school which is a real draw for them.

I am contmeplating a new free school but only because its linked to well performing and highly subscribed secondry but its a distance for me and will inolve me for 2years doing 2 different schools. but we live a distance so no guarantees but its on my list for dd 2 starting 2014 and dd2 2015.

Tiggytape I know what you mean.

but read the admissions for new free school attached to one of best secondry schools in city. if they had a place reserved at seniors then yes i would make the effort as i have 2youngers ones , youngets would hopefully get sibling and then would just have to worry about right senior school for eldest who will be in year 5 when youngest starts.

we only get 3choices here.
however the frees schools in diffrent la as city centre
so could apply up to 6 3 in each la.

they should hopefully have eldests school as realistic choice due to sibling policy so nothing to lose by applying I wouldent have lost a choice.

I would apply for a new school.

No out of date resources (especially old reading scheme books)

No entrenched staff who don't like change.

Yes. Because it might mean DS3 not having to travel across town for a school place by public transport.

Also no 'set' ways of doing things, so IME better with SN's, better with G&T, fresh, excited teachers, brand new building and resources, school basically 'built' around my DC's year group...What's not to love?!

CouthyMow · 14/08/2012 10:12

Would still apply to a free school due to lack of places, but would have reservations.

amidaiwish · 14/08/2012 13:37

yes i would apply to a new school, especially if in a generally good catchment area.

If the eventual premises are in a do-able location, then our first choice of primary for DD will be a new Free School - mainly because it will be bilingual.
