How to boost Writing level over the holidays?

My DC needs a bit of a boost with her writing level over the summer holidays. She was a 1a at the end of Year 1, which in itself is fine, however in conjunction with her other levels is quite different. I've discussed it with her teacher and have some punctuation areas to work on. What else can we do over the holidays? Her reading is at a much higher level and she is getting through plenty of chapter books, which I know being a good writer comes from being a good reader.

Any ideas of what else we can be doing? I know it's the holidays but my DC get a little over 10 weeks in total so there is plenty of time for play, days out and lazy days.

Although I don't believe in setting extra work in the hols what I did do once with DS1 was get him to keep a diary. Just a couple of well written sentences, good punctuation etc. He would also draw a picture and stick things in to do with where he'd been- tickets etc.

She's keeping a summer diary again this year so will encourage her to write a little more. Her writing is plentiful and interesting, just not ticking the boxes in the overall assessments.

I have child same age just done year 1 and started getting her to write a diary, lists.

she got 1b for writing and reading and maths so trying to do bit focus on all 3.

we joined reading challange at libary.

we doing couple mini projects as right now shes into

the olympics
butterflies

so right now shes drawing butterflies-well copying from libary book we got.

shes then colouring them in and writing their names.

we plan to do trip to butterfly farm in hols so will get her to write about that.

I wouldn't worry about the assessment criteria, some of it is pants, anyway. Not the same as good writing, for sure.

It's very normal to be "lower" in writing than other subjects at this stage I would think?

We play games where we make up a story and take it in turns to add a bit to the story (spoken not written, helps them to think about story structure and vocabulary). I encourage the DC to use lots of joining words and WOW words.

Yes absolutely normal to have a lower writing level than reading level. I feel like I need to defend my reasoning for wanting to help my DD improve in her writing over what is nearly 3 months of holiday, which is ridiculous of course. Thank you for your suggestions. I like the idea of taking turns to write a story, she'd enjoy that. I've also got a list of WOW words and sentence openers.

DS has just finished Y2 and we have now started to read a bit every day and I want to focus on his spelling a bit and also make him use punctuation in his writing.

I think I might take about 10 of his past spelling words and ask him to write a little story/paragraph using all the words. A diary is a good idea, but it all has to be brief as he is a very reluctant writer.

Will have to think of some other ideas to get him to write a little.
