We have practiced and practiced to no avail. Why can't you buy shirts with stud fasteners!!! Anyone else struggling or got any suggestions? She starts reception in Sept

She will only need to get it on and off on PE day. Can she get it over her head if you leave the top buttons undone.

Keep practising it will come - if she is struggling plenty of others will aswell.

Is a shirt with buttons not a polo compulsary?

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 25/07/2012 16:46

Yes no option to wear a polo, has to be a full shirt.. Will try the over head method and see how we get on, thanks Smile

If you really have to, you could take off the buttons and sew them onto the button holes, then sew on a bit of velcro to stick the shirt together. (You could just do it on one PE day shirt)

This does mean she may take a long time to learn to do buttons, though.

Surely someone will help her on PE day? They do in our reception. It's very comon at that age.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 25/07/2012 16:56

I'll mention it to the teacher when they come for home visit and keep practicing in the meanwhile

We struggled as my dd started reception but she soon picked it up. She won't be the only one struggling.
You know its PE day in reception as they come out at the end of the day with their uniforms all over the place.

I feel for you!! We have a different kind of button problem. Dc has a phobia of buttons and will not even touch them. Have tried everything- sorting them, games at nursery, bribes,Grin, and ended up just choosing clothes without! Now Dc is going into P1 in 3 weeks and still won't go near the blasted thingsEnvy so am resorting to Velcro on the polo shirts!! Really hope she grows out of it some day(soon)Wink

A bigger size top may also help.

My DD was born with only one hand - from yr 1 her uniform had to be a buttoned shirt. With practise she can now do her shirt unaided (she has just finished yr 1)

They will help her in reception - I was so worried for my dd. She was only just 4 when she started and also has muscle problems making it even more difficult for her. And she had the fiercest teacher in reception...but she learnt really quick, bless her. They will help them to start with, don't worry. And when she is getting dressed every day in the morning, she will pick it up...just don't be too keen to help her at home.

I sewed my DC's top and cuff buttons on with shearing(sp?) elastic. Their arms could go in and out of their cuffs without undoing the buttons and the elastic meant that it was easier to do the buttons up at their necks.

DD is really going to struggle too with buttons although she can do the bigger ones on her cardigan.

Tbh the teachers do help them and your DC will not be the only one who struggles.

Is it a full uniform with a tie etc???

sashh · 26/07/2012 09:44

Just replace the top button or two with velcro or press studs - then she can take it off over her head

DeWe · 26/07/2012 10:50

I replaced the top button for dd2 with velcro. She has only one hand and the other buttons were fine, jist not the top one.
