Independent schools.... Asd children

does any one have any information on private schools that would accept a HFA child (4)

Honestly, right now, location is not important.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Not sure if they take that young but More House near Farnham Surrey has a good reputation with friends who have children attending (although started during Primary school years).

Thanks. Will check it out.

WorryWart - you are totally panicking.

There are loads of schools that take kids with SEN.

There are also loads of private ASD schools. Google will show them to you.

Do you want an ASD school? Or a MS school?

But don't move because of a school. The school might not suit your DS after all...

minceorotherwise · 23/07/2012 09:01

There's one in London but I can't remember the name, it takes kids with aspergers I think and has a good rep
Try googling with dyslexia also. I'll have another look

saintlyjimjams · 23/07/2012 09:02

Why are you looking to go down the private school route? Can you give some background? Ds2 and ds3's private school seems to do pretty well with kids with HFA (and also those with MLD's) but while I would recommend someone local checking it out I wouldn't suggest moving for the school.

In state school you won't have to pay for extra support - you might in a private school.

I am totally panicking. I agree.

My application for a statutory assessment for DS has been approved, so there is no reason that DS won't access 1-2-1 at the state school he's been allocated.

I'm just so worried that, if he doesn't do that, he's not going to access school. I need a school which will let his TA go with him and, as far as I can see that is easier in indie schools.

I have tried ALL the special schools I can find. None will consider DS because of his IQ (approx. 200... Most of the schools seem to specialise in kids with an IQ of 70 or lower... Happy to be proven wrong)

Saintly - can I ask what school your kids go to (PM me if you don't want to put on a public forum) the private preps we were considering won't consider him.

Most special schools that are left do cater for children with severe learning disabilities (ds1 attends such a school), it would be a totally inappropriate placement for a child with HFA,

Is there a specific TA you have in mind? If so why? Because you are doing ABA or something? It can be easier to arrange ABA type shadowing in a private school, but I doubt you would be able to access state funded help specified in the statement at a private school. So you would probably have to pay for any 1:1.

Will PM - but later - have to dash out now with the kids.

Thankyou SAintly. That is much appreciated.

Yes, DS has a lovely relationship with his tutor (she is a qualified EY teacher, but would be happy to work with him as his 1-2-1 TA in a classroom setting).

Mostly, I trust her. I (and DS) already have a great relationship with her. She would, I believe, be excellent at working with the teacher so as not to interfere with roles and responsibilities and DS knows he hasn't got a CHANCE at getting away with stuff when she is in the room.

The two schools we'd selected (both selective) have both refused to offer a place to him.

If he has a statement for a full time 1:1 you should either go to the state school and try and see if it works.

Or go for a private ASD school. There are quite a few of them.

IndigoBell · 23/07/2012 09:21

For example the Cambian schools.

worrywortisworrying · 23/07/2012 09:40

He doesn't have a statement yet. Probably January 2013. Smile

Grimsdell - Mill Hill Pre-Prep. There were several children with ASD, mild ADHD etc the DCs year.

minceorotherwise · 23/07/2012 13:58

It was Fairly House school I was thinking of. Not sure of their admissions, know they specialise in dyslexic children, not sure about asd

minceorotherwise · 23/07/2012 14:00

Fairley

Huge vote for More House School near Farnham from me. DS who is HFA / ASD went there last year & it was his first genuinely happy year at school & he has made great progress too. Smile
