lIm bit confused as eldest got

1b for science, numeracy, writing and literacy.

I was lead to believe 1b national average so thourght ok not so bad.
her readings improved loads

i was happy with that baffled as her numeracy is much weaker than reading.

spoke to my freind yesterday shes primary teacher and said schools expect 1 a at end of year 1 and b /c is below average.

so today spoke to classroom assistant who said 1bs on target, average and good.

The school reports came out no explanation few parents complained she told me was now on school website.

looked at website which told me 1 b below expectation:(

googled and some sites said 1 a some 1 b so which is it?

hubby did some reading with her and online reading test cant remember which website and her reading came up with age 7 shes not 7 until feb, I take it this is innacurate as if this was case she would be 1a or 2c.

like i say im pleased she making progress.

we reading for fun and doing reading challange at libary.

we need to do more number work.

just dismayed if 1b is below i have lot extra work to do to get her to 1a as next year she has to be working to level 2 and has sats.

its the disparity i find confusing.

another weird thing is daughter tells me that there are 21 levels of reading and shes on level 3. teaching assistant says theres only 10 all way up to year 6
A few of her freinds are on level 6.

im honestly not bothered about others.
It does upset eldest as shes comparing.
most of her problems i feel is confidence.

flipping hate national curriclum as seems so much pressure.
hubby says maybe shes a high b in reading and low b in numeracy hence why shes 1b for all.

My daughter has just finished year 1 also.
I think 1 level a year is expected in key stage 1 so therefore your daughter is on track to achieve level 2b which is expected at end of year 2.

I wouldn't worry where others are regarding reading books but just keep her interested and enjoying reading over the summer holidays. Even get her to write a few paragraphs about what she has read or write her own little story if she would enjoy that.

They want them to leave Y1 as a level 1A which means your dd is working just below where she should.

She would then need to move up 2 sublevels to a 2B in Y2 to be at the National Average.

But in the whole scheme of things it really does not matter as long as she is happy and progressing.

Thanks alphabettie

i have gone from worried other week

then was told average and ok

then told my freind no its below
teching assistant says ok average but school website says its below.

kind of ironic that b means child is secure in that level.

im avoiding the pushy overcompetative mums where I can.

but have heard
others in year getting mostly 1s and 2cs.
my freind daughter younger got that and today get another dig dont worry your kids avarage and shes very sporty!

I know eldest tries
shes not at bottom shes in middle.
They lead me to belive last parent evening les that 2months ago that she was being taught in small groups which thourght great.
but that was very temporay amd she hasent had any one to one time in last 2months.

dont know when they decide on levlels I assume end of term not half way through as be slewed.

also read online its varaible as results depnd on teacher who marks it.

the misinformation and school being bit cagey and sheepish today has annoyed me more.

Schools expect your child to finish yr2 on a 2B so although 1B is on track to get that some schools now ask for a 1A at the end of yr1 (mainly to take into account the new phonics test).

This is what has happened at my DC school anyway.

DS is now in yr2 and lasts yr when in yr1 the expected NC level was a 1B but this yrs yr1s expected level is a 1A if that makes sense. But to be perfectly honest I would not be disappointed with a 1B as it is still perfectly possible to get the 2B iyswim.

simpson · 19/07/2012 23:37

There is also a big difference between what is average and what is expected too although I don't know what it is!!!

2B is expected at the end of yr2 but not average iyswim.

not dissapointed just confused.

shes feb birthday so middle of year.

shes made huge progress since reception.

she passed phonics test 36/40 think 32 the passmark.

shes level 3reading whatever that is. people mention colours on here im baffled current book is green but gues different schools use different books.

will do some stuff over summer and hope over time she gets 2b or 2a in year 2.

shes stressed over other people being diffrent reading level as few people teased her in class as they on level 6.

she hasent a clue over her na levels as havent told her just said fab report well done mummy/daddy proud of you.
asked her what she found tricky and she said numbers and topic work

when questioned what topic work was with ta she said its humanities geography/history. not sure what aspect of science shes struggling with as confused what science would be in year 1.

she gets 8-9 and 10/10most weeks in spelling tests.

will help her practice her writing and get it neater.
will try and get her enthusiastic about reading again.
do few online educational games to help with phonics and maths.
do some extra reading and dare say better stories than school one.

I been quite hands off this year and laid back upuntil recently with reports and other people quizzing and comparing.

The library do a reading scheme which is really good with stickers awarded etc for books read.

Also the Oxford owl website is good for ebooks to read free.

Sounds like she is doing fine [ smile]

IndigoBell · 20/07/2012 06:10

There is no expected level for the end of year 1.

The expected level for the end of year 2 is 2b.

Some schools then target children to achieve a 1b by the end of Y1, and some schools target a 1a.

Most schools target 1b, because most kids will make 3 sublevels in Y2 - frequently even more.

So your child is doing really fine, and you can relax.
