There are lots of phonics threads at the moment and I haven't read them all sp apologies if I am repeating things.
DD failed her phonics test (30/40) and of the 10 she got wrong, 9 were non-words.
Her reading came on brilliantly in yr 1 and she's gone from struggling badly with stage 2 to reading stage 8 confidently and even more importantly, enjoying it. Her teacher says her reading age is 7.5. At end yr r she could not read cvc words at all. She was only on level 2 because she had had every level 1 book in the school.
The school does do daily phonics sessions, but DD finds them boring (she is not alone in this) and prefers sight reading. Also I don't think the school is completely on message with phonics, the reading books are mainly old-fashioned ORT, and DD has received lots of lists of sight words and key words to learn throughout yr r and yr 1. She says she had never been asked to read non-words before the test (unsure whether this is true!).
She doesn't want to sound out and blend much when reading to me, and I feel a conflict between what I'm trying to do (which is a type of reasonably informed mum phonics) and what she does at school, which doesn't seem to be so phonics based.
School's letter on the phonics test says she'll get more help on phonics next year, though tbh school has said this throughout yr r and yr 1 and I have little faith in it being delivered in yr 2.
Does any of this matter? Her reading is really progressing rapidly, and her comprehension is excellent. We do read lots of library books so I know she can manage non ORT stuff. It's just that I'd like her phonics to be much stronger.
So I suppose I'm asking in a very long winded way, how can I improve her phonics with little back up from school, given that it isn't her favourite method of reading?
