Handwriting

I received My DS report on Friday and all in all it's a good report, he is average or above in everything apart from handwriting, which he in below average.

I've praised him massively for the progress he has made this year, but I would like to improve his handwriting over the summer.

I was wondering if anyone has some fun ideas rather than writing or copying stuff out. We're already going to send postcards when we go away next week has anyone got anything else we can do together?

No. Bought handwriting pen today. At school he uses a pencil to do everything, what are the benefits of using a fountain pen?

Just realised he doesn't hold his pen correctly either, this might be part of the problem but how on earth do I correct it?

nagging

My DD has always had awful handwriting and so is mine. Slightly shaming as I am a primary teacher, however my Mum was a teacher as well and she remembers hours trying to get me to practice my handwriting!
My DD's handwriting started to improve when she was encouraged to join her letters, which wasn't until year 5 unfortunatly. You need to check he is forming his letters correctly to start, but perhaps this might work for him as well?

Louboo2245 · 15/07/2012 19:25

His letter formation is spot on. This year they as a class have started to do cursive (my twin nieces are in the same class) and when he stops and tries his writing can be quite neat, but it's his general work.

Summer hols is a perfect time to improve a pen grip. My ds's teacher told me that by year 5 it was too late to change it, so I decided that over the summer holidays I would be able to supervise/notice almost all the writing he did (which school obviously wouldn't be able to) so (other than some drawing time) every time he picked up a pen over that six weeks I asked him to show me a correct pen grip and helped him adjust it if necessary. He went back to school in Sept with beautiful and much faster handwriting.
Good luck!

With you Louboo - our DS is 8.1 and am going to try to 'nag' him this summer holidays.

Since going on to joined up writing this year, his handwriting has become 'interesting'. One problems is letter formation - for example he doesn't always finish the letters in the correct place before joining on to the next one and another is that ascending/descending letters are a bit muddled...Even his own name isn't always written clearly Sad. He is above average/average in other areas...

Have bought this workbook (he likes workbooks) which has the same script they use. It's hard when he never chooses to write for pleasure at home.

My DS, also 8, has terrible handwriting, and was picked up as a major concern on his report. He also writes as little as possible, and his teacher said that he uses far more eloquent and advance language when speaking, than when writing, as he always wants to write the least amount possible.

We are planning to work on this over the summer, but I have already noticed that he seems to press far too hard when he is writing, which also slows him down. I have been getting him to practice forming the letters on the ipad today, which he enjoyed, but the challenge will be replicating it on paper. He has several bad habits in the way he forms letters, which I need to break, and I think this will make a significant difference.

Not sure how I get him to enjoy writing though. He's a pretty good typist, and doesn't see the need for handwriting, despite me trying to explain!

Louboo2245 · 16/07/2012 09:14

My Ds also writes as little as possible despite having fairly good language. The problem is he is also shy so doesn't excel at speaking and listening, because as much as he will listen he doesn't speak.

He generally gains confidence through the year but when he goes up a class it's right back down at the bottom. It's happened every year so far, but next year he will have the same teacher so we might set on a good footing.

So we'll just have to see how we go.
