can someone recommend a handwriting workbook or something similar to do a wee bit of practice with my end of yr1 (probably dyslexic) son over the summer please ?

Have you considered getting him to write a holiday diary? With mine we take photos and then he writes a bit about what happened that day.
I'm not keen on worksheets because although they help with letter formation, they don't help with the mechanics of writing auch as sentence structure which is as important.
Also keeps my two quiet for half an hour.

I also bought a writing practice book in Morrisons of all places! It has loads of fun ways of getting them writing. Ir draw a pirate then write 10 words to describe, or gives a series of pictures and you have to write the story of what is happening.

thanks red blanket ! do you remember what it looked like / what it was called ?

This is the program that I think you'll find helpful: Write from the start www.amazon.co.uk/Write-start-Programme-Perceptual-Handwriting/dp/1855032457
.
It works best with younger children, like your DS. My DS (now eventually diagnosed as dyslexic with handwriting difficulties) was recommended this by school when he was 10 and it has still made a really big difference to his writing. It's not cheap - but money very well spent IMO. I wish my DS had worked through it years ago.

I've just bought the Morrisons one a steal at £1.99 I think, write draw and doodle stories pad, big Zebra on the front. DS (also end yr 1 hates writing) really likes it which is amazing Grin and has even done a couple of activities in it bigger Grin

Its the one HappyGlamper mentions. I bought it a couple of years ago, gla they still sell it.
We haven't done anything from it for a while so I might get it back out again for a rainy day. DS loves drawing and its a good mix of drawing and writing.

I've bought the Morrisions one for DD for £1.25. I'm guessing that is regional differences? Happyglamper are you down south?
