DD's school has one class per year, just found out that for the next two years it's mixed year 1 and 2, then she rejoins with everyone she was in reception with in year 3. Can anyone give any insight on how they split (age/ ability?) and how it works out for the children? I have every confidence in the school, and am sure they are only doing it for the benefit of the children, would just like a little detail on how, really. My only concern is she has a couple of really close friends and I'm a little worried about the reaction if they are not together. I know it doesn't mean she won't see them, but know there will some initial upset. Thanks for any advice.

Please don't worry about your DD being in a composite class. Schools have many more of these classes than they used to (for funding reasons). The maximum number of children in a composite class is fewer than for a 'straight' class. It will help your DD get to know more people within the school. She will most likely be in a group of children from her year group who have been judged by the school to work well together.

Thanks for the advice. Turns out that this year it's a bit different as the year one teacher is pregnant and will be leaving halfway. Instead of two mixed year classses it's one year with two teachers, so luckily I don't have to worry about her being split from her two best friends. She would have been fine in a mixed class, I know she has a few friends in other years that she plays with. Though she has been upset at leaving reception - I think it hit her and she had some kind of 5 year old mid life crisis the other night - She was wailing, " I don't want to grow up - I want to be a little girl forever and live with you forever!" Which of course had me crying MY eyes out too!
