DS (7) is in year 3. He is a hard worker who behaves well in school. He is a late Aug born.

End of year 2 SATS results. W -2B R-2B M-2A S-3

Just had his year 3 report. It is lovely Smile. During the year I have bought up his literacy (writing mostly) as I know he struggles. Teacher told me in Feb he was a 2A, APP showed 2B in Dec (usual I know) and he had DST which put him not at risk although did show up some difficulties. She didn't actually have anything saying 2A but she said that's what she thought he was so probably what he was evidencing in class iyswim?

This report shows W-2B R-2A M-3B

Then they have below, working towards, acheiving and exceeding for the other subjects. DS got all A's - and E's in ICT, Science, French, History and Geography.

I give this information to show that academically he is fairly able.

Now, I have concerns that his writing level has not improved. I do also have a feeling he may have only been a 2C at end of year 2 - certainly wasn't what I would assess as a 2B! I did try and ask the teacher in Feb if in fact she thought he was only a 2C when he came up but of course professionalism prevented her from saying anything!

Now in Feb he was described as being lower end of average for writing but now he is clearly considered as being below average/ expected. The gap between him and his peers is widening which if I am honest is my biggest concern for him. There may come a point his inability to record his thoughts affects his confidence, esteem and behaviour.

I have requested (as you can) to go in and discuss his report.

I would love some advice about what I should be asking for and things I could request/ suggest for the school and myself to help DS. Also his teacher (who is absolutely fab btw) is retiring so should I/ could I request the meeting with his new teacher present?

TIA

Rather than get stuck on the whole was he a 2c or a 2b when he started I would simply go with saying that you think he is struggling relative to his peers and ask for their take on what are his main weaknesses. Is it spelling, punctuation, sentence structure? If you have more of a clue where his main problems lie then you can then try and support this at home by working on this particular area. If he has lots of different weaknesses within his writing then ask which area they would recommend focusing on first.

He has general weaknesses - spelling is one! he just cannot retain the correct spelling. Also rapid recall was poor and something alse I can't remember without finding looking at his DST test.

I'm not really that worried about what level he is - because it's been clear from day 1 his writing level would always be lower - but I am concerned he's made no progress. Although his report states there's been clear progress month on month. Confused

I like the idea of asking what area to focus on. I do know if you asked him a grammer rule he would state the rule to you, how and when it's used but he can't apply this to his writing it seems. He is also a painfully! slow writer.

I'd love to have some kind of programme or workbook we can work through, say - doing 10 minutes a day as I cook dinner? as he obviously needs intensive work.

What should I be asking from the school? He already does 2 groups. (phonics and reading)

Rang office and asked for meeting as it says to do.

His teacher rang me and agreed that it would be helpful for his new teacher to be there.

He is one of their targeted children.

So what should I be asking? Should I be asking for timescales for things - to re meet etc?

Great that he is one of their targetted children Smile. He is clearly going to be given extra support.

youarekidding · 12/07/2012 22:36

Yes. He is going to get some extra help. It was a quick call but seemingly it will be in class help and support as oppossed to out of class?
