My dd has been given a level 2c for reading in her end of y1 report, she is reading white band books which she reads really well, i understand white band books are about a level 2A whilst i realise that this is not an exact science i'm a bit Confused as to why dd only got a 2C as her report says she is a confident reader with good comprehension.
What else could be a factor here?

When you say good comprehension how is she at inferential understanding? (reading between the lines)

howsthat · 11/07/2012 20:49

Hmm I'm not sure i know what that means Blush
Do you mean predicting? When we read books at home she can answer anything you ask her about it and will point things out throughout the story.

No not predicting

A simple example is the sentence

We went to the park.

A literal question would be ... where did we go? ...to the park

an inference question would be ... what might we see at the park? ... grass/flowers/slides/ducks/friends/ trees/ ....... (no answer in the text so the child has to use their knowledge of parks to give an informed answer)

Ah i see, i can't see her having any problems with a question like that.
I will see the teacher on friday so i think i will ask her what it is that's pulling dd's level down.

That's obviously a very simple example below 1C level

My DD is reading lime level books but the NC level didn't correspond with what I found online. However, somebody posted a good link on here the other day about what they actually need to be doing to get the NC level linked to the book band and I understood why her NC level didn't match. Will see if I can find it!

2c in year one is an excellent level, well above national expectations. Your child may be a good decoder, but higher levels (more like end of y2 levels by the way) are achieved by commenting on writer's use of language, inference and deduction. These skills will all be worked on in y2 more, but please don't worry 2c is really, really good, Wink

This

Google 'app reading I can statements' and you will see what is expected for level 2a (which would be above average for end of y2) and you will see it is much more than reading high band books. Also the teacher has to observe the child doing each one at least 3 times before it can be awarded.

X posts - yes that is it!

Thanks mrz and popsypie

Thanks for the link numbum, that's really useful

Also, if the school is using APP to achieve 2A the child needs to demonstrate all of level 2 and some of level 3.

My DS is in yr 1 on Copper level (NC 3 ) and got a 2c as well. Reading the APP grid, he does the majority of 3c at home, but not on a consistentenough basis for the teacher to have gathered enough 'evidence'. I am happy with his levels though. :)

Also, we got an overall literacy score, not just reading. He would probably pull a higher score if it was just reading, but his writing lowers the score.
