Going up a whole level between feb & June?

Is this likely or do you think they have written 3b instead of 2b??

Got my sons report today and we had the levels, we get half year levels too. The comments bit says slowly improving which doesn't tally with a level leap in such a short space of time.

I won't be able to see the teacher till next wk to confirm.

So was he 2c in Feb?

darthsillius · 11/07/2012 17:12

He was 2b in feb and 3b now

Hmmm Hmm, not a teacher but sounds like a heck of a jump to me as a parent.

mrz?

mrz · 11/07/2012 17:20

Yes quite possible

darthsillius · 11/07/2012 17:21

He's made minimal progress in last few years so he's due a jump and I was excited but then my paranoia made me think
It could be a mistake as the comments were not over the top.

Possible, but I'd say it's not terribly likely.

workshy · 11/07/2012 17:45

my dd did this

she was working at an overall higher level but was missing one or two of the more basic points which meant she couldn't achieve the higher level

she cracked these 2 skills and suddenly jumped up

perfectly possible with the way the NC levels are achieved

DontEatTheVolesKids · 11/07/2012 18:00

DS's reading "age" increased by 3 yrs over a 3 month period, so to me seems plausible what OP said. Congratulations! Your child is not a robot.

Peaksandtroughs · 11/07/2012 18:07

What subject is it for? I think it is possible for Science or Maths but more difficult for English. One of my children made 2 sub levels progress in six weeks in Maths, and the other made no progress at all in Maths in a whole school year.

darthsillius · 11/07/2012 18:11

It's for writing. The slow progress comment is odd though. Trying to talk to my dh but o2 is not working. He's got ofsted too so wanted to see if he's ok too.

It is possible, one of my children jumped 4 sub-levels in a term for one subject. There were some gaps in his understanding, once he grasped it everything else fell into place.

KitKatGirl1 · 11/07/2012 18:39

Sorry, I think it's much more possible in writing than anything else - if teacher is following levelling criteria very carefully. My ds has 'missed out' being a level 4 and gone straight from a 3a to 5c in two terms because there were some level 5 things which he's been doing for ages but had to get all of the level 4 criteria to be able to be a level 5.

Imagine: dc uses all higher level punctation correctly - brackets; speech marks; semi-colons etc but sometimes forgets full stops. Once they can do the full stops/caps all the time, they'll skip loads of sub levels!

bigTillyMint · 11/07/2012 18:43

It's definitely possible, but I agree that the slow progress comment doesn't fit. Do you think his writing has improved significantl over the last few months? Can he write extended pieces withou support which are easy to read?

darthsillius · 11/07/2012 19:07

We have been doing lots at home because he has not made much progress and has problems with handwriting

Strangely he got a 3c in the test and he had a scribe for this as it was externally marked.

Is he in year 3?

I've had quite a few kids jump a level or more since the start of the year, although doing it in 4 months seems unusual. Maybe the Feb assessment was not done properly?

What is the level based on? Teacher assessment or QCA papers?

darthsillius · 11/07/2012 20:23

No y4

It was a teacher assessment, the qca test was 3c. He had a scribe for this because it was externally marked.

He had only gone up one sub level in writing for each of the last 3 yrs

Has massive handwriting problems which we have just started seeing an OT for.

I sent the slip back today and mentioned how pleased we were with that amazing progress of a level in half a year. Noones replied to say it was an error so that's looking good! Parents eve next wk so will talk about it then.

It wasn't a mistake he has gone up a whole level in both reading & writing since mid year. So relieved!
