Can anyone recommend good Primary Schools and areas to live in Glasgow?

Hi there,

I'm considering moving to Glasgow with my son who is 9 to pursue a Masters degree. We are from the North East of England where we have a system of primary/middle school/high school, and my son is just about to enter middle school.

I have very little idea which areas of Glasgow are good for families with young children so any recommendations would be very much appreciated! I'm going to be attending the Art School and i don't drive, so I'd like to be somewhere fairly central, but not at the expense of my son's schooling. I will be away from my support network for the first time, so if anyone knows of strong community areas that would be great!

Thanks :)

Lenzie. excellent primary and secondary schools. 20 mins by bus into the centre of Glasgow. There's a train too but you'd need to look up the times. I think its frequent though.

Depends on your budget! The West End is fantastic and would be very handy for the Art School but doesn't come cheap unfortunately.

Look at Clarkston or Busby

I'll recommend the South Side as a better value alternative to the West End. Pollokshields, Langside, Shawlands, Cathcart. Shawlands, Glendale, Langside, Tinto, Battlefield Primary schools are all decent (Pollokshields Primary has a challenge with the number of kids with English as an Additional Language - 7 years ago it was 98% Shock, not sure if it's changed - but Glendale, the other school in that area, which has an excellent reputation and which ds has just left after 7 happy years , is chocablock and it would depend on whether there was a vacancy in the year your ds is looking at - but having said that, the head teacher says that they do come up periodically).

Kilmarnock Road, in the centre of Shawlands, is a good central point with lots of coffee shops. Good transport links into the centre of town.

Shawlands Academy has a good reputation - but I'll let you know my personal experience later, as ds is due to start there in August! It's going to be the first SRU funded Rugby Academy in Glasgow from August, as they like the values that rugby encourages - but it is not compulsory for your child to be part of it (those that are get extra rugby sessions taken both from PE and from a rolling timetable of their other classes but it doesn't just cover playing, it also encompasses fitness and nutrition etc)

Bearsden and Milngavie are hard to beat, but pricey. Fab train links to Glas and Edinburgh, easy to get to university.

I should have mentioned Bearsden and Milngavie (after all, that was where I was brought up and went to school Wink) - but as you say, the area is pricy.
