I haven't been on mumsnet for years. Hallo. And can I ask a question about book bands and levels at the end of year 1?

I am quite laid back about education (3rd child) these days but I was surprised that dd3 was given a 1A (average I believe) for reading. She's now reading the Happy Families series (alhberg) fluently and the last book band she was on was Gold. I am a bit out of touch but I naively thought that her reading was above average. I don't want this to sound like a bragging mother thread BUT I was genuinely surprised. Don't want to ask the teacher as I know that I will sound exactly like a pushy mother Smile.

Ib is average, so 1a is above average.

My Dd2 is 1a (beams) but/and is on ORT reddy orange...there is no white or gold at our school as far as I know Confused

littlemiss06 · 15/07/2012 20:47

In our school 1a is average 1b slightly below

DS is on white band. He's been on white band forever. According to his report he is a Level 3.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 15/07/2012 21:22

it is not just about what they can decode and read aloud. there are lots of other boxes to be ticked. 1a means they are doing all that is required for level one, plus a few extra things from level 2 statements, but maybe not enough for a level 2 or not the right combination of statements for level 2.

dd is reading stage 12 books (higher than ohnevermind) yet is assessed lower nc level than nevermind's ds because she can decode, but not do all the talky-about-books thingies.

reports were highlighted with the bands that are expected. year one was 1c-1a if I remember correctly.

dd seemed to be stuck on white band forever too. there seemed to be more scope for expanding sideways and increase vocabulary.

My Ds is on stage4 blue and got 1c. Others achieved 1b on stage 3. When I asked about it I was told the others had more fluency to their reading, quicker pace, and had experienced range of genre!! Lol rigby star obviously didnt do it for my Ds

Enid! Have no idea about reading. Just wanted to say hello! Why have you disappeared from Twitter?

50shadesofstress · 16/07/2012 09:27

Yes DS was also stuck on white level for ages and was a bit miffed that other people on lower bands were moving up quicker, he eventually moved up to lime, when he had only been on lime for a short time he was assessed as a 2A but even though he is still on lime he is now a 3c.

There is a huge criteria for the white level upwards so it can take a while to move up. Up until white level DS had always moved up 2 or 3 bands at a time.

I actually feel quite glad that DDs school hasn't given NC levels at the end of year 1 as at least I can't worry about what she's got (am slightly tempted to ask but know this would be a Bad idea Grin)
