Best Maths tutor website?

DD in Y3 and has always struggled a bit with maths and I want something she can work on over the summer. We have done workbooks in the past and always start with enthusiasm but then they get forgotten and I thought as DD loves to be on the computer this might work better. I want to improve her numeracy confidence and practice times tables so that she hopefully find things easier next year. I'm considering themathsfactor summer school but wondered if anyone had used this site before or any others. Thanks :)

I can be found recommending mangahigh.com on a number of threads (no vested interest). DS yr3 loves it, the games are fun and colourful, it's cheap, the child's progress is monitored and the games offered in a suitable sequence.

uk.ixl.com/ is very good for practice. It doesn't teach per se, someone has to explain the concept to the child but its easy to follow what they are trying to show and then it makes the child practice it until they have mastered the topic e.g. 3x table or identifying 3d shapes.

There are reports measuring progress against the national curriculum which may be useful to you.

My son also struggles with his numeracy.
I've tried www.mathletics.co.uk/ which is quite good but then a friend of mine recommended RM easimaths home.rm.com/shops/rmathome/Products/PD2644063/RM-Easimaths/
This is a cheaper alternative to tutoring and my son absolutely loves it :)

Maths Factor Summer School - fairly cheap and NC based - good school year review.

shebird · 11/07/2012 17:11

Hamishbear yes I thought that the maths factor summer school looks like good value and a good general review of the year. Have you started using this? Interested to hear from anyone who has tried it.

Hi shebird:

I haven't used the summer school - but have been subscribed to arithmetic school on Mathsfactor for 2 years now. DD1 was really struggling end of year 2 (as in couldn't even take 1 from 10) and she's solidly, steadily learned functions and number patterns with this very visual and gradual teaching method.

I really can't speak highly enough about it. We were in complete despair about DD1's poor maths when we started and it has completely turned things around. Minimal time commitment - 5 times a week for 10 - 20 minutes a session. There's usually a free trial - so give it a try.

It may not suit everybody, but if your DD responds better to visual explanation than verbal explanation, this may be the solution.

I'm a great fan of Whizz.com. It is really good for teaching children how to do the whole range of the maths curriculum. If you get an Answer wrong, it goes through the question again in stages and explains how to work out the answer.

The tutorial goes through a process and oh have to do,the exercises to move on, whereas many children will bypass questions they can't do or understand.

There are many many maths sites, but a lot of them are like filling in paper and can be very boring. Also, if they get the answer wrong, there is no explanation as to,why, so the child doesn't learn anything.

Whizz is more expensive. It cheaper than a real tutor but I believe a parent should be with the child to offer additional support.

We spend a lot of time trialling maths sites and this has been the best for filling in all the gaps not taught At school.

Mathletics is good for revision, but you need to,understand the topic. The tutorials can be very. Confusing especially if you don't really understand the topic.

There are lots of good video sites, but you need to know what suits your child and what makes them tick.

There are lots of fee paying cheaper alternatives but they don't cover, the whole. Curriculum.

I choose paying sites to get the records so I can monitor strengths and weaknesses and work with the teachers on areas I have found issues.

Off you want more, info am happy to help.but also search Whizz on Mumsnet because I have written lots about it in the past. And no I am not linked to,the company, just a mum who wants my kids to understand maths

Computer keeps adding commas and full stops so sorry about all,the mistakes.

shebird · 12/07/2012 16:25

Hi PastSellbyDate thanks for this I think my DD is also a visual learner and her teacher has also said this so mathsfactor might just work for her. I'm going to give the summer school a go I think I've just never used a program like this before so I want sure. I just really want her to understand maths better and not always be held back by her lack of confidence.
RoadArt thanks for the Maths Whizz info I'll bear this in mind and might use this one after the maths factor summer school.
