School Report Y3 - no levels given?

shebird · 10/07/2012 12:22

Just had DDs school report and it has the usual comments under each subject heading but no levels. There are targets noted for areas to work on and we did get levels at the end of Y2. Is this normal not o have levels at Y3?

Schools have to report levels at the end of KS1 and KS2, but not all schools give levels at the end of each individual year. Ask the teacher if you're interested.

dillnameddog · 10/07/2012 12:26

Me neither. I am going to ask!

RosemaryandThyme · 10/07/2012 12:26

Yes and school do not have to give sub levels.

Have a chat with school to get a feel as they will know if it's a high/low level3.

They do not have to automatically report them to parents, but they do have to give them to you if you ask, as they do any information they have on file about your child.

I asked for them when my Ds was in Y3 and Y4, they have since changed to including them on school reports.

I don't understand - if they know the levels why not share them with the parents?

Because the majority of parents don't give a hoot.

RosemaryandThyme · 10/07/2012 13:32

Maybe some would be more interested if they were given - and a bit of comparing started up in the playground.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 10/07/2012 13:36

Often parents just don't understand what the levels mean and have to come on MN to find out from the teachers on here! It doesn't seem to be common knowledge that expected levels are 2b (or secure level 2) in Y2, 3b in Y4 and 4b in Y6. Maybe teachers don't report them so they don't have to explain what they mean. And as Sunscorch says, the majority either aren't bothered or don't understand them. They prefer to read the words that do make sense to them.

shebird · 10/07/2012 13:56

They could give words and levels with perhaps an attachment with a guide to what the levels mean. The words are ok but I find there are some useful individual comments about the child peppered between some cut and paste fluff. I had to read the report a few times to figure it out. If levels were given along with the expected average for the year group it would be an instant confirmation of where the child is. The narrative would then allow you to work out what the actual strengths and weaknesses were within the subject.
sunsorch I think most parents do give a hoot and teachers shouldn't assume we don't and just keep us in the dark.

Our reports were changd quite a bit this year, following consultation with us as parents. We suggested that they put the cut and paste fluffy bit in one section and they have done that - a kind of class review of the year's activities. Makes the rest much easier to read.

How do you know if your dc has made progress if they're not there?Hmm

Surely there should be last years level alongside this year's, along with how your dc's level fits in with national expectations.Your child could have made inadequate progress and you'll be completely in the dark.

Don't get the benefits of keeping parents in the dark.Just because some aren't interested it doesn't mean all aren't and maybe all should be.

DiscoDaisy · 10/07/2012 14:15

One of my DCs schools puts levels on the children's reports but also include a sheet of paper with the range of levels expected for each year .

shebird · 10/07/2012 14:36

DiscoDaisy thats exactly what I would like to see on our reports.
I am also more concerned because it was mentioned in an ofsted report about the lack of progress in levels made by some pupils. So ofsted know the levels and the teachers know but parents dont? I just want to know as much as possible so that I can help now if they need it and not wait to find out in Y6 when its all too late.
