At what age / yr group would these Levels be appropriate?

Maths - 3B
English - 2B
Reading - 2B
Writing - 2C
Science - 2B

And would these levels average to a 3C?

I don't want to say what year group these are for until I know what age these would be the 'expected' levels for.

And where would I find a set of 'descriptors' for each level - because while I agree with the Maths level, I am thinking that the writing level in particular is bollocks too high - this child still reverses 'b' and 'd', and uses practically no punctuation (writes in long-ish paragraphs with no full stops, no capital letters, no commas), and his writing is just legible, not joined up either. Which makes me in turn question some of the other levels. And at the end of the previous year, this DC was still working towards NC level 1C in writing, so has supposedly made 4 sublevels progress in just ONE school year. Which I think, as his parent, is Hmm

School in question has been PROVEN to inflate levels in the past, to prevent SA being needed...And been forced by LEA legal team to put DC back onto SA/SA+ after taking them off it.

Hence needing some information.

TIA.

To put it into perspective - my DS1 gets more than an hour a week in a group of 5 with the SenCo, an hour a week with a TA doing extension work, AND 30 minutes a week 1-2-1 with the HT doind exam practice. Despite being a solid level 5 in Reading and Writing and a solid level 6 in Maths at the end of Y5.

My DS1 gets a small amount of 'floating support' from a TA taken from a statemented DC's 1-2-1 time, causing that DC to not be getting the full support HE needs...and nothing else!

Would it be better for you to pay for a laptop for your child, rather than an EP report? It would certainly be cheaper.

And you know if the private EP report recommends a laptop, your DS still won't get one.......

I honestly don't think there is anything you can do to get school to help him.

All you can do is stuff at home.

AnxiousElephant · 10/07/2012 22:18

write to your MP and failing that turn up at his office, bang on doors and don't stop until they are answered.

CouthyMow · 11/07/2012 00:57

The school won't let him use a laptop in school unless it is a school one. I asked in Y1 AND Y2.

A private EP report saying he needs a laptop won't get him one, but if I manage to get a statement using the private EP report, the statement WILL get him a laptop...

Its pretty hard to get a statement from a private EP report. You really need a LEA EP saying he needs one.

Why don't you apply for a statement without an EP report? It'll probably get turned down, but you can reapply whenever you like.

mrz · 11/07/2012 07:50

It's pretty hard to get a statement with a LEA EP report at the moment

IndigoBell · 11/07/2012 08:04

Absolutely. It's very very hard to get a statement.

So if you're going to struggle to afford an EP and you're doing it to get a statement you need to think very carefully about how much money it'll cost and what you hope to get for your money.

It'll be far easier to convince school to let your DS use a laptop then to get a statement.

RedHelenB · 11/07/2012 10:41

Agree with Indigo - make it clear that you won't hold school responsible for loss or damage & get them a laptop if that is what they need.

CouthyMow · 11/07/2012 11:58

It's not to do with loss or damage why they are refusing - it's because it would be 'unfair' for him to use a laptop when the others aren't. Hmm.

I KNOW It's a long shot trying to get a statement with a private EP report, but due to the school actively blocking parents with SEN from trying to get one, to the point of lying about NC levels (the local Secondary SeCo has HUGE issues with this - she gets a DC in Y7 that she is told is a 3a in everything, so only a bit behind, then when SHE assesses them, they are on level 1 and are functionally illiterate and innumerate...), and hiding necessary paperwork, refusing to even ALLOW DC's to SEE the LEA EP etc.

It's been an ongoing issue with the school, and the ONLY reason his year group has so many SEN DC in is because it is such a huge year that there IS nowhere else to move them to. In every other year, 99% of DC with SEN have been removed from the school. I PERSONALLY know of 20+ parents who have moved their DC's due to this. And at least 12 of them have got full statements since they have left this school, when their DC's were on SA if they were 'lucky'.

It's just more of an issue in this year group as moving the DC is not possible.

There IS no way of getting the school to allow him to have a laptop that my Ex has paid for, because we have been asking since Y1, they just WON'T allow it. They have even told me that they will take it off him and give it back to me at the end of the day...

I asked the SenCo for an URGENT appointment on Monday. She only works Mon, Tue & Wed. I still have no appointment...

I can guarantee that she will be 'unavailable' until the end of term, and I will have no way of moving things further until AFTER the holidays.

I have aske dhis teacher to tell me which areas of KNOWLEDGE he is struggling with, but she says she is 'too busy' to tell me. I only want to know so that I can work on it over the holidays with him. Sad

The school is just so damn bloody obstructive, and it won't even START getting fixed until he gets to Secondary, but the Secondary will be overwhelmed with SO many SEN DC that haven't been helped appropriately that they won't be able to offer him the same help they did my DD, who came through the same school, but was in a yr group of 60 with about 6/7 DC who needed that amount of help. In DS2's yr, he will be going up with a yr group of 90, with 20+ that will need that level of help...just from ONE primary.

I can see the Secondary SenCo kicking off then, but that doesn't help for the next 3 years, does it?!

Oh - and I know I can apply without an LEA EP report - but considering that I have applied every 6 months (as frequently as you are allowed to) since he was 3.5yo in pre-school, and the LEA consistantly refuse to even ASSESS him for one - as the school keep lying about his levels when they are asked for them - WTF else am I left with?!

I start filling in the next statement application as soon as I have posted the previous one...

Oh, the school takes DC down from SA+ to SA, despite them still having the 'outside involvement' that means that according to the SEN COP, they SHOULD still be on SA+. I.e. They are still seeing a developmental paed, ENT, OT, Physio, SALT etc.

Private tutor? If you get a good one they should very quickly be able to assess where the weaknesses lie.

IndigoBell · 11/07/2012 12:27

Can you home educate?

Move house?

Enrol him in an online school? (as part of HE)

Appeal for a place in another primary?

Go private?

Tutor him outside school?

Don't send him to school till the EWO gets involved?

Discuss it with the secondary school?

mrz · 11/07/2012 17:12

My son had an EP report saying he needed to use a computer/laptop for his work. Like Couthymow's son's school, we were told the school had none and if I bought one they wouldn't be responsible for it in school. Some of his teachers even refused word processed work despite this being recommended by the EP.
Schools do not have to follow advice from EP reports.

CouthyMow · 11/07/2012 17:43

Can you HE? No, I have a non-sleeping 17mo currently being assessed for ADHD, get little enough rest as it is, I am also disabled with epilepsy and fibro.

Move house? Can't, am in Social Housing AND have a PSO that the courts refuse to vary that keeps me tied to this ESTATE for another 8 years.

Online School? Again, associated issues with HE.

Appeal for place in another school? Already appealed for a place in all 5 other local schools and been refused. All the other 5 schools are VA Controlled, and they refuse to go over 30 in a class even in KS2. Also complicated by the fact that I have an older DC in Y5, and can't get to two schools in opposite directions by public transport (admissions blackspot, right in the middle of where all the catchments stop)

Go private? Hahahahahahaha lol. I am a Lone Parent on benefits, and my Ex earns £16.8k pa before tax.

Tutor him outside of school? See above for finances, tutors in this area for KS2 (I live in the catchment of a super-selective Grammar) are £30+ an hour.

Don't send him to school till the EWO gets involved? She already is. When CP is going round the school, DS2 sometimes has to take a month off due to him being immune suppressed due to the prednisolone he takes for his asthma...

Discuss it with the Secondary school? Have tried, they 'don't have the time' until he is in Y6...

IndigoBell · 11/07/2012 18:12

Well then you'll just have to (continue to) teach him yourself.

There's nothing an expensive tutor can do which you can't.

CouthyMow · 11/07/2012 23:40

Yes, indigo, because there's enough hours left in my day after trying to cope with their disabilities and do daily Physio and OT with TWO DC that need it, while looking after a toddler who more than likely has ADHD and is in the process of getting assessed (and therefore due to the ADHD sleeps for less than 5 hours in every 24, not all in one block, and I get even less, currently surviving on 3-4 hrs a day), while simultaneously trying to make sure my fourth DC isn't left out attention wise, and trying to at least attempt to do some housework, all the while dealing with my own disabilities, I totally have the time, energy and ability to teach my DD and DS2 everything they should be getting taught in their 5 hours a day at school too.

Nope, still under my trousers. I didn't turn into Wonderwoman overnight...

Setting aside the sarcasm, due to the issues outlined above, I NEED more of it to be done at school, or they just won't be functionally literate and numerate when they leave school. Which will leave them unemployable in any capacity. And I am in the unfortunate position that supporting adult DC's that are unemployable will be IMPOSSIBLE.

So, any ideas that are actually going to get the SCHOOL to help?

OP posts:
CouthyMow · 11/07/2012 23:48

Do I just have to do the same as I did with DD, and write off all of his KS2 education to the useless system, and hope that the Secondary will be able to offer him the help they offered DD (Which is looking to be increasingly unlikely, as they are converting to an Academy in September AND they are likely to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of SEN DC that are significantly behind on Secondary entry (historically SEN DC at this primary make LESS sub levels progress over KS2 than NT DC, so in effect fall further and further behind) from just this one primary out of the six that feed into it, that the chance of DS2 getting the same help as DD has done looks INCREDIBLY unlikely.

Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh!!!

Would you be open to any of the therapies I've done?

If so read 'the brain food plan'.
