Dyslexic test in yr R

Hi
Just wondering if anyone knows about a dyslexic test they do in yr R. The teacher said DD was ok on this except the auditory part which she didn't do well in. What does this mean and should I be doing anything? (I didn't really think to ask the teacher at the time!)
Thanks

Do you mean reception? Far too young to test for dyslexia! What was the test called?

Scottie04 · 09/07/2012 13:47

I'm not sure what the test was called, and yes she is in reception.

that's interesting. My son is in Yr2. They said they don't test them until Y4 as they've found before that they get about 50% false positives/negatives.

That is, they do test them at Y2, but more as a reference point, possible indicator. They don't rely on the test results for dyslexia until Y4.

I think you may be confused, you can't test for Dyslexia at such a young age. Some schools run cognitive tests PIP's or CAT's to determine where a child's strengths and weakness' are. The teacher should have explained the results to you and given you areas to work on at home. I would go back and ask.
Auditory could mean listening skills and carrying out a given instruction.

What I think your child has had is a phonics based test which tests auditory discrimination. The test is called Lucid Rapid and can be used with children from age 4. And BTW ed psychs can assess young children- some can do it ages 3-4 years- using a variety of tests.

It's actually good news that your child has been assessed using Lucid- shows the school is proactive.

What you should do is ask the school to follow up with repeat screenings later and meanwhile help your DD with her phonics at home. You might like also to think about looking for a specialist teacher via PATOSS if she continues to have probelms.

Just as extra info- Lucid is a computer based screening test. It is one of several- there are different levels for different ages- which aims to pick up problems associated with dyslexia- from a young age.

I agree with Amelia.

She probably has various mild issues with auditory discrimination or auditory processing.

If you're not concerned do nothing.

If you're concerned I recommend Earobics. It's about £50 from the dyslexia shop and has loads of games to improve auditory skills.

thanks for the info. I will do some reading.

Earobics

Sound Reading

Not saying you should buy those programs - just showing you some of the options you have.

But I do want to stress again, don't do anything if you don't think there is a problem.
