SATS scores - what on earth do they mean?

OK, this score you get with your child's school report - 2a or 3b or whatever. I read all the explanatory stuff the school sent home several times, and I still couldn't work out if they were saying my kid is a genius or a dumkopf. So can I ask, in advance of next week's reports (because I don't want to get suspected of boasting by stealth or get shown up as the mother of a dunce - and given I can't even understand the stats system, the latter is looking quite likely): what on earth do these numbers mean? And what level should a child reach at the end of Y1?

In my DC school they should be on a 1B for everything but have recently upped the reading to a 1A to take into account the phonics test at the end of yr1.

Ah thank you, SteamingNit, that is way more helpful than the bumf the school sent out. So it doesn't specify a particular level till age 7, when they will have sat SATS? The assumption being that at the end of Y1 they should be progressing well towards that? And is 1B generally considered on track, as at simpson's school?

I have to ask here because dd's school is at the epicentre of overinvolved middle class parenthood, and they are highly skilled at telling us nothing Grin. That drawbridge is well and truly up. I think they rather like me, because I generally keep out of their way and DON'T ask questions, but the result is that I have no idea of what goes on in there.
