What targets does your school set in KS1?

Please can you help me decide whether to take something up with DD2's school.

IF your school reports your children's targets in KS1, can you tell me how many sub-levels of progress children are expected to make during KS1?

My children's school has a policy of setting a target of three sub-levels per year. Is that the usual target? I have a feeling it might be higher than usual, because average attainment on entering year 1 is well below national average and the school is trying to address it.

But I have a little girl here who is upset because her report says that she has "not met" her target, despite the fact she has got lots of 2A, has made two sub-levels progress during year 2, and in fact has made two whole levels' progress during KS1. Am trying not to be too obsessive about it, but I'm quite annoyed that DD2 now feels that she's not done well, when she's actually doing great.

2 sub levels is fantastic. She is six years old ,she should be made to feel secure and happy with her achievements. In some schools, such as mine, level 3 is almost impossible.Give her a big hug and celebrate what she has achieved,I have been showing the children in my class their work at the start of the year and how much they have moved on-the smiles on their faces have made my week.

Thanks Elleballoo. I think she's made amazing progress this year ... just need to think of ways of convincing her Sad. The school is rightly obsessed with monitoring performance, because they have some history to put right, but they way they have presented the information hasn't been too helpful on this occasion.

if you have her Y1 books, show them to her and make a big fuss about how much she has learned. We are put under such pressure and if children get 8/9 at the end of EYFS they are expected to get a level 3. A passion to learn, enthusiam and developing independent learning and social skills are far more important. We totally lose sight of the fact that in many countries children don't start school until they are 7 and yet we expect them to know so much and to jump through so many hoops to reach targets set to make schools look better.

Look at me...a teacher who hasn't used a capital letter...1a for me today !

Three sub levels a year but that would mean they would be level 7 by the time they get to year 6? 2a is above expected levels for a year 2 anyway.

My DD got mainly 2as at the end of KS1 and she is now in year 8 of a high performing grammar school!

Bloody levels- they reduce kids to numbers with no thought to peaks and plateaus during their learning. Angry

Who exactly told her she has not met her targets?

"We are put under such pressure and if children get 8/9 at the end of EYFS they are expected to get a level 3."

Interesting - she got 7s and 8s.

Brigit - her report includes a column reporting whether targets have been met/not met/exceeded. It's the first time that this information has been so obviously shown on their KS1 reports, so I wasn't on the ball enough to realise before she read it. (My kids have always read their own reports and it's never been an issue before, because the gradings etc are such gobbledegook that they've only read the nice, supportive comments!)

I full level per year in KS1 and 1 full level every two years in KS2 BrigitBigKnickers but hold your breath because Mr Gove is planning on scrapping levels

Thanks mrz - that makes sense.
