Report's in; come and tell me that I'm being stupid...

Just got DS's (nearly 6, is one of the youngest in Year 1) school report. He seems to be working at the expected level in most things, doing well, is popular etc. There are just two things that are concerning me - he is apparently working just below the expected level for writing (full stops and capital letters a bit askew) and he scored 34 in the screening test. It says the threshold is 32 and it's out of 40.

Now I've not come across this screening before, so is 34 just scraping in by the skin of his teeth, or fairly average? I'm telling myself I should get some perspective as he's obviously doing alright generally so I shouldn't let the fact that he's writing a bit at a lower level colour my view of the whole thing. Do these reports take into account the fact that he's one of the youngest?

Feel free to tell me I'm being daft. PFB, you see. I'll have this nailed down for next time... Wink

Have you had a parents evening recently? Your son sounds like, considering he's a young reception child, to be doing absolutely fine but if there were any concerns I'm sure his teacher would have brought it up at parents evening

We had one a few months back but the teacher didn't really flag up anything about him being below standard in any particular area. (That phrase sounds awful!) To be honest, my sane rational self thinks that he is doing well, he reads very well (imo) and fgs, he's not even 6 so should I lose much sleep over it? But the non-rational side of me wants to know if I should be making more effort to make him do more work outside of school? Hmm

The screening test would be the phonics test -many threads about it. 34 is a perfectly respectable score and just says he -probably- downs't need additional phonics support. The writing also sounds very normal- many children are slightly slow starters at this age.

The 34/40 will be for the new phonics screening test. 32 is the official pass mark, but anything in the high 20s and above will be considered ok. My ds also got 34/40 and is only just turned 6. Regarding, the writing did they give you his NC level eg 1c, 1b or 1a. My ds got a 1b for writing. At our school a 1A is considered to be expected level but I know that has recently changed as when my dd was in year 1 at the same school the expected level was 1B. So the goal posts seem to have been changed along the way.
