To worry or not?

I have concerns regarding my 5 year old ( feb birthday).
He is in reception starts year 1 in September.
I was wondering where your child is or at at this age (regarding phonics/reading/writing ect).
I know all children learn at different rates, but when would you become concerned?
I have no idea if to worry or just wait and see.

My dd1 (also feb birthday) at the end of yrR was a fairly optimistic ORT 5 (think green new system) and struggled, went down to ORT 3 after holidays despite reading over holidays, struggled for much of yr1, then big leap yr2 (despite same teacher), she just got 2a in SATS which is at or just above average, on ORT 14. She can read most books appropriate for her age but still doesn't love reading.

I guess for me at this stage I would be looking at whether he is grasping the basics of phonics, and if not look at helping him with that over the summer. Some children just do seem to take longer to read than others, which is not to say that you shouldn't be concerned and wanting to help him, but there is still time for him to reach a good standard without significant intervention. Try the library reading challenge, that really helped her, they will order in reading books for his level if you ask.

Thanks for your reply.
My son is struggling on ORT stage 1, he does know most of his sounds but finds it very difficult blending together.
He's number writing is unreadable, he can write some letters but if copying a word will for exp write it as ti ect.
He finds it very hard to retain info so if he has learnt anything new then an hour or so later the info will be lost.
I do not want to compare him with other children as they are all very different and indervidrual.
But when I'm in his class and I can see him getting frustrated because he is struggling to do half of what they are doing, that's when it upsets me.

I am not a teacher, and I'm sure one of them will come on to give you more helpful advice. But I would definitely ask his teacher whether they have concerns - or whether they think he is just a slow starter. We do teach reading early in this country, and some kids - especially boys - just don't seem to be ready.

Hi OP I have a reception boy too! He's just in the last week moved onto ORT2 and speaking to his teacher she's not worried about him - he's made a good start. He's really improved in the last couple of weeks and has a few months on your son. I wouldn't worry yet - start doing some additional phonics work with him at home (Bear necessities A1 from Sound Foundations is perfect for this) and keep supporting him. Encourage him to write and keep it fun. Don't worry yet, but equally don't just leave it either because while he may just be more ready in a year, 10 mins etc work a day won't upset him and can only help! Much easier to

Sounds like how my DD was in reception (I think)

She has very severe dyslexia.

Thank you all for all your replys.
I do have other children, 1 who is older then my 5 year old but tbh has never gave me any reason to worry.
It's hard to know what to do for the best sometimes I don't want to come over the over reacting parent.
I was told at christmas he was at the lower end of average and then the last parents eve we had (last term) we were told that he is in the bottom groups. Hubby asked if he needs more help and was told that would be up to the year 1 teacher.
I think his teacher is brill but I just want to know in there opin if he is having problems with aspects of his learning and how we can help him.
