DS is coming to the end of Y3...assessed at 3c for reading and numeracy, 2a for writing (same 'score' in both the test thing and teacher assessment).

He has gone up one sublevel for each which I understand from reading other threads isn't anything to worry about in itself. In any case he made fairly significant progress (went up 3 sublevels in reading/writing and 4 sublevels in numeracy) between end Y1 and end Y2 so, coupled with the transition to junior school, I was fully expecting a less 'dramatic' (for want of a better word!) year this year in terms of progress.

But is the fact he's still working at level 2 for writing a potential issue? Obviously he has made progress within the year but is not at level 3 yet. He is late summer born btw so young in the year but not sure how much of a bearing this has at this stage of the curriculum...Are they supposed to have ideally reached a minimum 3c by the end of Y3?

Some schools do target 3c for end of Y3, but my school targets 2a.

Then if he makes 2 sub levels next year he'll be a 3b - which is again exactly where he should be.

writing is often behind the reading score so not that unusual, plus if he made such progress last year, you would expect slower progress this year

sounds like he is on track

if the commets in his repport suggest he is working hard then I wouldn't worry

My youngest is 14 so I have really forgotton about SATS levels in primary...so could someone tell me what levels are expected in yr 2 SATS?

My 7yo grandson has just done his,and son in law told me the results and I had to oooh and ahhhh as I didn't have a clue Blush

workshy · 03/07/2012 22:42

2b would be national target/average (not sure which but...)

crazynanna · 03/07/2012 22:45

And how do the levels go up or down? I mean...is it 3-2-1 (high) or 1-2-3 (highest)? Thank you.

workshy · 03/07/2012 22:48

it goes
1a, 1b, 1c (c being the highest)
2a, 2b, 2c -level 2 higher than level one

and so on......

workshy · 03/07/2012 22:51

argh don't flame me

wrong way round (it's late)
2a is higher than 2c

I'm an idiot and will freely admit it Grin

crazynanna · 03/07/2012 22:52

oh ok thankyou.
Well I had better act like I know what it means now when I see him! Grin

crazynanna · 03/07/2012 22:54
Grin I cannot flame you as I don't know what it means anyway!

They didn't give him a letter though...they just said "he got 3s'" Confused

workshy · 03/07/2012 22:58

they do that at the end of year 2, will be specific within the 2s but if they get into the 3s which is above expectation then you just get told 3

3s are very good :)

crazynanna · 03/07/2012 23:00

oh right thankyou for the help Smile

Well seeing as the boy done ok...looks like Ice Age 4 next week then only because I want to see it Wink
