Finding a non-drawstring P.E. bag for a 4 yr old.

So dd's new school have politely asked that we avoid drawstring bags for their P.E. kit. Apparently the strings all get tangled on the pegs and as a result it takes the very little kids even longer to get ready.
DD has never had one and I do think it's a sensible request. The problem is I can't seem to find an alternative. It needs to be something that closes but will still hang easily on a peg and not take up too much space. My thoughts were a sort of shopper style cloth bag with a zip.
Any ideas where I can find something like this or any ideas on what I should get?
Thanks in advance.

How about something like this or this?

harbingerofdoom · 02/07/2012 22:01

How strange. A four year old is probably in reception year. PE bags have been drawstring for decades.
It keeps everything in.
Are today's children less able to manipulate? If so why?
Most commercial alternatives will be too big for what they need.

Agree a bit odd - I think most schools have draw string

Would a small cloth bag work , open top 2 handles - like a small shopping bag.

Have seen some handmade/personalised ones - some on ebay under fabric tote bags.

How about a really simple cheap basic backpack, easy to wash and without too many pockets to have to rummage through? My girls always seem to end up getting given these. They don't meet our needs but might be the sort of thing you want for PE.

I hate drawstring PE bags - they are a pain (sometimes literally!) for DD to carry as she ends up with it round her neck when she comes out of school. It's the length of the strings I think. Am thinking a backpack would be better possibly.

I got my DD's PE bag from the local £1 shop! Its very similar to this <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?start=84&num=10&um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&channel=fflb&biw=1008&bih=433&addh=36&tbm=isch&tbnid=lIhvuCbUGiPGxM:&imgrefurl=mingtuo.en.made-in-china.com/product/PqaQrkgUYShC/China-Happy-Dog-Recycle-Foldable-Shopping-Bag-AV-02-.html&docid=zwlgYYUSsnyZBM&imgurl=image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00kCgTqYsagKcl/Happy-Dog-Recycle-Foldable-Shopping-Bag-AV-02-.jpg&w=500&h=375&ei=xRTyT8X7Aof-8QP87piQDQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=643&vpy=115&dur=458&hovh=158&hovw=205&tx=115&ty=128&sig=115453841952927683719&page=6&tbnh=118&tbnw=147&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.google.co.uk/imgres?start=84&num=10&um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&channel=fflb&biw=1008&bih=433&addh=36&tbm=isch&tbnid=lIhvuCbUGiPGxM:&imgrefurl=mingtuo.en.made-in-china.com/product/PqaQrkgUYShC/China-Happy-Dog-Recycle-Foldable-Shopping-Bag-AV-02-.html&docid=zwlgYYUSsnyZBM&imgurl=image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00kCgTqYsagKcl/Happy-Dog-Recycle-Foldable-Shopping-Bag-AV-02-.jpg&w=500&h=375&ei=xRTyT8X7Aof-8QP87piQDQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=643&vpy=115&dur=458&hovh=158&hovw=205&tx=115&ty=128&sig=115453841952927683719&page=6&tbnh=118&tbnw=147&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:84,i:18

I would go for a simple backpack, one zip at the top nothing else.

DD's is a cloth bag with a drawstring, I find it difficult as when DD carries it it normally ends being dragged on the floor. But opening and closing is not an issue.

Haberdashery · 03/07/2012 14:46

DD has one of these which would make a cheap and practical PE bag.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 03/07/2012 21:06

DS uses a small backpack with a handle at the top above the straps. The handle is small enough to fit on the peg and he can carry the bag himself to and from school - result!

Like this but a bit smaller I think.

Snoopersparadise · 03/07/2012 21:18

Thats so random! You would think if they are "politely" asking that, they would be providing/suggesting/selling an alternative!

passivehoovering · 04/07/2012 12:43

My DDs nursery replaced all the childrens drawstring bags with little cotton shoppers at the request of Ofsted. The long drawstrings are a Health and Safety concern for them, starngulation I suppose?

passivehoovering · 04/07/2012 12:44

sew a couple of ribbon handles onto a pillow case?

PoppyWearer · 04/07/2012 12:46

Odd that they don't sell an approved one. My DD's school said the long strings are a health hazard, but sell "approved" ones with short strings for £2.50.

whatmess · 04/07/2012 16:29

Thanks everyone, some really good ideas. I think I'm going to go with the backpack idea.
