Reading for DD 5.7 during the holidays!

DD is 5.7 in reception. Does anyone have any recommendations for a set of reading books I could get her for summer holidays? She likes the Dandelion Launcher ones from school and is on the first stages still with CVC words. I wouldn't normally worry, it being the holidays and obviously she can read plenty of other books etc. But she's recently started getting quite into the reading scheme books and is suddenly doing well with phonics and sounding out words, so I think she'd enjoy carrying on during the holidays. Thanks!

If you try your local library I would bet they have a holiday reading scheme with special materials, stickers and adults to talk about the books read and suggest more.

Ours has one for 4-11 year olds.

Our local library has a shelf of early reader books. Some of them are colourcoded the same as the reading levels at school. We have done the reading scheme for about the last 3 years, I must be a cruel Mum as I insist some are reading scheme type books

Thanks, good plan.

you could probably pick from whatever schemes the library has in. floppy's phonics, ort traditional tales, read write inc by ruth miskin all have phonics based books. picking across the first levels of several schemes will give you a few books to practise on.

here the first 4 books are pictures only, but useful for skills such as telling a story, or coming back to in year one for writing traditional tales.

read write inc

some of the books. there are more available and this set only has 3 I think out of 5 from each level. pictures are a bit dull but the text seems to progress fairly slowly.

You can look at the Oxford owl website which has school reading scheme books online that are free to read.

Our local library has some fab early phonics books by Sue Graves which are very good and are colour coded to fit in with school reading schemes.

You can also buy the songbirds Oxford reading tree books quite cheaply from the book people. They are from stage 1-6 and are all phonetic. There are 36 books in the pack IIRC.

Was also going to say Oxford Owl. There are quite a few Ebooks on there that can be part of the school reading scheme.

At DDs school they don't stick to any of the reading schemes. They have books from all of them and then colour code them along with other non "made for learning to read" books. So DD sometimes comes back with a book from ORT and sometimes she just has a childs book (something like the Very Hungry Caterpillar etc). I have to say, I think the standard childrens books are much harder than the ORT type books!

I signed my DD up to Reading Chest last July. If you have the money I think it is definitely worth it especially over the holidays. She loves getting her envelopes with books in and we can try out different schemes. We get a colour band higher than she is at school. In the hols it meant she kept up her enthusiasm and they were schoolish but I chose different schemes. We also recommend Oxford Owl for the free e-books although DD was quite upset when she wanted to read a book that wasn't available!
