Books for Boys - help please!

Both my boys (year 1 and Reception) are getting more confident readers but the books from school are not very interesting, and mostly fiction. The school is working on ordering new books, but I would like to buy some new books for them at home, they have gone through all the usual Chip and Biff books, and basic phonics books. The eldest is reading the early readers version of Horrid Henry. They both like non-fiction books - about cars, stars, how the body works, insects, etc and they also like adventure books with knights and dragons. Would anyone have recommendations, or do you know of a place on this website that already have that information? Many thanks!

Dinosaur cove books may be a bit hard for the moment but keep them in mind. Mixture of dinosaur facts and fiction there.
Check out shops like 'The Works' for non fiction books on space etc.

get those boys down to the library at the weekend. Most children's sections in a library will include non fiction books.

Summer Reading Challenge at libraries good too.
My ds in year 1 loved the easier Dr Seusse books.

billy bonkers went down VERY well in this house with a 6 yr old, mum & dad, last night. Funny stories, lots of pictures. similar level to the horrid henry early readers but a bit more text.

USborne do a set of First Readers that are levelled, I think 4 would be like the Horrid Henry Early readers (DS2 is currently devouring the horrid henry). How about omething like this one about knights we have StarWars ones from DS1.

Dk readers are fab, because they come in different levels. Mine loved magic treehouse and they are a good mix of fiction story and facts. Mine read about 30 of them the summer between year 1 and 2.

Yes thank you so much for the suggestions. I will get some out of the library, but the books are to take away with us on holiday this summer so I prefer to buy a few. I am ordering two DK stories (DSs MAD about star wars, they will love this!) and one Billy Bonkers (my youngest is called Billy so he'll enoy those!) and a pack of four Magic Tree House. Should do them for a while...

Thanks!

Project-X books (OUP, I think) go down very well with the boys (and some girls!) in dd's Reception class, and I remember dd1's male pals enjoying them in Y1 as well. Micro-men, good pictures, adventures with giant insects etc

I'd agree with the Dr Seuss recommendations - my DS1 loved the rhyming and silly words - The Cat in the Hat, The Cat in the Hat comes back & Green Eggs & Ham were all favourites

Tiggles · 28/06/2012 12:20

D'oh, yes its DK Readers not the usborne readers that do starwars. That would explain why I couldn't find them when I googled Grin.

Another vote for the libary here - let them choose and go frequently - it will save you a fortune in books in years to come and they might like the summer reading challenge too.
