They might not have a year 3 but the teachers should be able to come up with lessons/materials that continue his learning. When DS was in yr1 there were 6 kids that were doing yr2 maths and this meant they 'fed off' each other nicely and there was no coasting.

So if he is average for Y2 then he would be on a Level 2b which means that they would expect him go progress another 3 sub levels in Y2 and reach Level 3b by the end of Y2. I am sure they well be able to differentiate and there will probably be a few others at a similar stage.

I always ask the teacher at pick up time if I have any questions.

He's probably working at NC Level 2 - so next year they will build on what he's done to get him to Level 3. I think (from memory) about 20% of children get Level 3 at the end of KS1, so it's unlikely he will be the only one at this level and the school should be well used to it.

We had the same problem back in Y3 and my DD was being sent to Y4 for maths tests.

From Y4 the annoyingly laid back teacher decided to keep her in with the class but give her harder work. This has continued this year (Y5) and she's now doing L6 Maths SATs papers.

We keep going in to see her teachers. I think they finally began to believe the work was too easy for her when i gave her Y5 homework to my Y2 DS!

So my advice would be to keep on top of the situation and make sure they set your DS ability appropriate work.

thanks for replies, his teacher is really lovely and have heard she is going to be a yr 2 teacher next yr so am hoping he has her so she can keep him stretched in this subject.

My DS1 is in Y5 but working on Y7/Y8 maths. The school take 3 DC out from his year and teach them separately, as those 3 (2 boys and a girl) are so far ahead of the rest of the year, and even the Y6's who they were in top set with, that they were getting bored.

They give them work, the teacher explains anything they are unsure of, and a TA supervises them in the library. So it IS possible for a school to differentiate no matter how far ahead the DC is.

The work gets sent by the local Secondary to the Primary. All 3 are sitting the level 6 paper, and are also sitting the 11+.

My DS and a couple of his classmates are working a couple of years ahead at maths. Up until this year, they were taught within the same class. This year, they have moved up to the next class. No idea what will happen next year. The school "stretch" each child to their own level, which is lovely.
