well it would have been my DS aged about 6 (early year 1) but having volunteered at school I would say there is a huge variety - some of his classmates were there in reception and I suspect some will be at that level in yr 2.

Or do you mean 2a etc

AdventuresWithVoles · 24/06/2012 19:32

I would think early-middle of y2, so perhaps 2c?

Kewcumber · 24/06/2012 19:35

Actually on reflection he wouldn't have used punctuation at 6 so maybe end yr 1

firsttimemama · 24/06/2012 19:36

Looks like something my 6 year old would write - Year 1 she was 6 in May.

wild · 24/06/2012 19:37

looks like y1 to me? 1B/A? difficult to say without seeing it on the page

IndigoBell · 24/06/2012 19:38

Level 1.

Need to be longer and have more detail to get a level 2.

Stannwigg · 24/06/2012 19:39

Yeah, agree on such a massive difference. My Dd age 5, almost finished reception would produce similar, but my DS (11) and at the end of year 6 would too.
One extreme to the other, really!

minceorotherwise · 24/06/2012 19:41

I thought the spelling, sentence construction and punctuation was good, but not much detail so it's a bit confusing to gauge.

Cockpark · 24/06/2012 19:44

Good story language, extended sentence by using the but, nice sentence construction and full stops and capital letters although some in the middle of the sentence. Some phones and key words spent correctly but not consistent. Would need to see more to give accurate level but defo ticking some criteria for level 1. Possibly 1B. What's handwriting like ?

Cockpark · 24/06/2012 19:45

Not phones?! Phonics!

minceorotherwise · 24/06/2012 19:49

Is level 1, year one?
So, how old is the child? 2 or 15 ?

Snoopkat · 24/06/2012 19:51

Year 1? My reception DD could prob manage the spelling, but the punctuation and sentence structure is better than she manages...

Huge span of abilities at our school though so hard to say!

wigglywoowoo · 24/06/2012 20:01

I would would say this was about a 1b.

Are capitals and full stops unusual in reception?

Cockpark · 24/06/2012 20:18

Yes mince year one in state school has range from W(a,b or c, c being lowest) which means 'working towards' level 1. We strive to get ours to a 1a by end of year one but you get a spread, typically wa up to 2c which is very good and above national expectation. Most kids achieve 1 b or 1a.

letseatgrandma · 24/06/2012 20:38

I would say a 1b, but I would want to see the writing and look at the letter formation/finger spacing/upper and lower case letters.

What year is the child?

daisymaybe · 24/06/2012 21:45

I agree with letseatgrandma - 1B - spelling not consistent enough for 1A (and would need to be longer.)

Vocab and sentence structure are good though.

Given that my Y1 DD is sitting next to me refusing to go to bed I have just asked her to write the story of the Three Bears. This is what she came up with:

"The 3 Bears

Once apon a time there was a norty girl called Goldylocks who went for a walk in the dark woods. Goldylocks saw the three bears pretty house and went in. She ate the daddys big porrije and it was to hot. So she ate the mummys middle one and it was to cold and the little porrije was nice and yummy."

It seems quite similar to your child's attempt OP. DD is the youngest in her Y1 class but she is on the top table for reading and writing. She is very seized with the idea that she must use "descriptives" and "connectives" in her writing. I have no idea what level she is.

Lots of schools use Ros Wilson www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/Ros-Wilson-Writing-Levels-3007850/ alongside/ instead of APP. She gives a lot of weighting to handwriting but it is a helpful guidance.
