Y2 & Y5 teachers, please ...

My DSs are moving to a new school this September, DS1 going in to Y5, DS2 to Y2.

I am having meetings with their current teachers during the next week or so to discuss what information/assessments etc need to be passed on to their new school. What can I reasonably ask for or expect, and what information from the previous school would you find most useful with a new pupil in your class?

Many thanks.

I would EXPECT to receive a copy of the last school report, any IEP's if applicable, levels ( with sublevels) for Reading, writing, maths and whole levels for science, any attendance/behavioural reports, exclusions, Social service involvement ( ie LAC, ). However I would normally get this from the previous school so, if parents did come in for a chat I would like to know what they like/dislike, favourite subjects/activities, anything that might affect how they would settle into class ( family upheaval, whilst a delicate subject can have a HUGE bearing on understanding a difficult child) and anything more personal that YOU feel is important and that I wouldn't get from a written report.

There is a system for the old school to send the information to the new school anywhere in the country, so you shouldn't need to do anything.

They are moving from state to private. The private school told us that they do not get the same information from all the previous schools, and that, with some schools, the responsibility lies with them (the school) to pass on, and with others, the parents must physically collect and pass on data to the new school.

Thanks Snowball. DS1 has had SALT involvement and IEPs, so will make sure they get all those along with the last report.

That surprises me. Our LA always forwards the files on to private schools. The only exceptions are when the child is going overseas, then the parent collects he file from the office, signing to say they've taken it, and delivers it to the new school themselves. No input from the teachers as all the relevant paperwork is stored in that file.
