Scottish mums/teachers

Hello,

can any Scottish mum or teacher give me an idea on what the scores for the P3/P5/P7 really mean? I know that the scores are between 70 and 130, and I know that anything between 90 and 109 means "age appropriate", and I know that these are just numbers, and that I should really read the whole school report (I have done, very carefully), and that if I am worried I should talk to the teacher etc etc., but I am sure that when a teacher sees a score from a standardised test, s/he immediately links it (in her/his head) to some level of attainment.

Well, can you tell me what a Maths of 115 and English 103 would mean to you? Is this average, meaning middle set in Secondary school?

What about a score of 130 and 130? Is it possible?

Thank you.

Hi, this is of no help but i'm a mum of a ds at a scottish primary schhol.

Ds is in P3 and i have no idea what you are talking about. We have no numbers on our school reports!

Sorry no help to you :)

Seona1973 · 21/06/2012 17:34

also in Scotland with one on P4 and one in P1 and also dont know what you're talking about. Have never had numbers on a school report.

Hello,
and thank you for your post casawasa.
I just fo und outthat this is for East Renfr. I thought it was for the whole of Scotland. So, not only we get the Dressing for Excellence, but we get also Testing for Excellence.
How do they decide what a child needs to know for an average score of 100? Does any teacher on MN know? I am even more confused now.

I don't think it's PIPs testing.

I found this leaflet: www.ea.e-renfrew.sch.uk/curriculinks/Links/Parents/Parental%20Leaflets/Standardised%20tests%20leaflet.pdf
Anybody knows about this?

My daughter is in p5 in an east ren school and just got the report card home today. Did you get yours today?

Anyhow, we had asked for a meeting with dd's class teacher a few weeks ago as we are sure she is making minimal progress in maths. Teacher told us her english score was 106 and something like the school average was 104 and the east ren average 102 (might not be exact figures, but I am not far out).

Her Maths score was something like 92 which was below the class, school and east ren average. Think school or east ren average was 105. Teacher told us there would only be concerns if she had scored below 90. We are worried about her low score in Maths as she really, really struggles with this.

I agree with you. The report told us her score of 106 (didn't mention the maths score) but then gave no explanation of what the 106 means.

Sorry I have not had a chance to read your link in last post. Will try and read later.

What age is your child?

I have one in P6 and one in P7 - well, until tomorrow lunchtime I do!! My eldest did the standardised testing (Stirling-shire) and we've had the reports but they haven't shared the scores - as I understood it wasn't aimed at individuals, it was in order to get an overall score for the year group so that they can measure school attainment and performance. I'd love to know what he got though :) The did some other testing about a year and a half ago and this measured their reading age - that was shared but I think that was a school initiative rather than a council one.

I didn't know that Euphemia, though in reality they finish at lunchtime today after their final assembly so I'm not sure if there will be much opportunity.

DamselInDisgrace · 22/06/2012 08:41

Oh dear, I just looked up that dressing for excellence shite. What a load of bollocks. I'm glad I don't live in east ren anymore.

trickydickie, my daughter is in P3. We got the report cards a couple of days ago. Actually, I was a bit surprised by her Maths score, as I always got the impression that the teacher thinks she's a bit slow. As far as I know, she was in the bottom group when we had our parents' evening (Nov/Dec, I think). I'm not sure where she is now.

Euphemia, I get the impression that East Ren teachers/schools think that their pupils are doing much better than the rest of the world. I was more or less told that it's not that bad to be in the bottom group (by teachers and other parents), because in East Ren all children achieve so well anyway... and that a bottom set here might be a middle set somewhere else. I really didn't like that comment.

I have to say, however, that we are very happy with the school and the teachers, who work very hard and are very caring (as I am sure are most teachers from the rest of Scotland).

I was in school today for my son's leaving assembly but decided not to bother asking - they were so busy anyway considering that was school all finished for the summer at lunchtime. At the end of the day it's only a number on a sheet and I know he is doing well. As long as he has friends and fits in at High School and is happy then that'll do for me. I think all they really wanted the scores for was to average them out to ensure that children are progressing in line with what they should be and improve over the years. I don't think that they were ever intended to be given out. Sounds like East Ren are extra competitive!!

sweetkitty · 22/06/2012 21:16

We don't get scores only this Early, First etc which means nothing to me.

eastendywendy · 22/06/2012 21:39

Yes we just get early / first - secure, developing etc etc.

amck5700 · 22/06/2012 21:49

withgreatpower, i think that's an old leaflet (but the standardised tests may be the same thing) as the leaftet refers to the 5-14 curriculumand now we have CfE instead.

All I know is that dd who will leave P7 next week was asked to do some online tests to give the government a wide range of results as to what kind of ability is within certain year groups. Dd was chosen as has an literacy age of 16.

The idea is that as long as a child falls between the top and bottom then they are progressing well or something. At least the levels system allowed teachers to know their teaching was going in properly.
