my Ds is a June born child. Did not get our first choice of primary, where his siblings go, but he is first on the list. Intake of 90 in reception.
Have accepted a place at school he was offered. Will cost me 180 pounds a month for wrap aroud care as schools long way apart and start/ finish at the same time.
He had a taster session today and i have come away feeling a bit confused. I am thinking of putting him in nursery for time being until we hopefully get a place with his siblings. Am i mad?

I'm in the same boat almost.. We moved new area and had to apply late for both infants and junior yr 3 space older got into jnr younger not in infants. I have a school 20 min drive away incl traffic .. but they finish at the same time. Could get after school and breakfast club for older DS but seems so much £££ just to send him to school.

I work part time and am considering HE till a space in infants comes up only 60 entry and when I am at work using a childminder I am so stressed by it all

piggychunk its difficult isn't it. I am tempted to do nursery and home ed. I know we could be waiting a while for a place, but feel happy to do that. His siblings were older children in the year and so were still at nursery at his age.

In your situation, I would do just that. Hopefully, it won't be long until a place comes up, and legally he doesn't have to start until September 2012 (the term after he turns five) if you are in England. I would tell the school you're waiting for about your plans, and hopefully they will contact you asap.

My DD2 was four last month, and I almost deferred just because she isn't ready to go yet - she's bright but very shy and verging on Selective Mutism, and is also a bit immature. However, she would have been the only one in her year starting late, which we decided probably wouldn't help very much with the shyness and trying to make friends :( In your case, I do think I would though.

I meant September 2013!

AdventuresWithVoles · 21/06/2012 17:02

I am under impression he won't qualify for any nursery funding from September; only schools and not nurseries can claim from 1 Sept after 4th birthday. So you will still need to pay something. Check on that.

AdventuresWithVoles · 21/06/2012 17:03

ps: can a person HE and their child still be on a wait list for school space?

kilmuir · 21/06/2012 17:14

I suspect he may not get funding. Will have to look into that. But we are entitled to defer, so can stay on waiting list and be 'educated' by me. I think thats what the admission lady said

I am confused, another mother at school said the funding is until they turn 5, so as he is not legally required to be at school then why can't i claim at a nursery.
Is the lack of funding connected to being on a waiting list?

I think you can get funding at a nursery until your child turns 5. I actually think your plan is a good one as you are top of waiting list.

Piggychunk · 21/06/2012 20:46

I also think the funding is till they are 5 and the whole of the term that it falls in. Are u worried about the teaching aspect.. I am . I know Maths will be fine but I really do not know where to start when it comes to teaching a child how to read Confused

hungrytot · 21/06/2012 21:03

you can defer and get funding for nursery place until child turns five. that's what I did.

kilmuir · 21/06/2012 21:12

Thats good to know hungrytot. seems fair

Check about HE+waiting list plus funding, our local rules may not be yours. I'd want to get these assurances in writing, by the way.
