Y3 - large discrepancy between teacher assessment and test result

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice or perhaps perspective might be a better word?

My 7 year old son is in Y3. At the beginning of the year he was assessed as a 3b for reading but got a 4C in his test result. Since then, due to maternity leave and staffing issues, he has had a total of 6 teachers (not including the multitude of cover teachers that have been brought in). His latest assessments came home on Friday and the teacher assessment now makes him a 4c but his test result has dropped to a 3c. Obviously, I'm aware that test results are liable to how the child performs on the day etc. but there seems to be a huge difference between a 4c and a 3c and I can't help but worry that this may be due to the inconsistencies in teaching that his class have been subjected to.

I did want to speak to one of his current two teachers today about it, but surprise surprise neither of them were there today and he's had two different teachers. Should I just dismiss this as a blip or should I speak to the headmistress? Is it worth it when there's only 4 weeks left until the end of term?

What would you do?

Any input gratefully received,

S

Have you got a parents' evening coming up? I'd go by assessments rather than test results, so if he started the year as 3b and is now 4c he's doing well and progressing. Single tests can vary hugely.

So, he's gone from a 3b at the beginning of the year to a 4c now.

Which is exactly expected progress.

So you should be pleased.

Hello,
Obviously I'm pleased with the teacher assessment and know that this is more indicative of his ability than the test, but I'm concerned that the test result seems so low compared to the teacher assessment and the previous test. I suppose I'm worried what effect all the changes in the classroom have had on him and the rest of the class?

So I presume you think I should just leave it and that I'm being a bit precious ;)

I think I'd be more concerned about the multiple teachers and what plans the school had in place to prevent this happening.

I would mention the test result, actually. As you say, it's a huge difference and it would be useful to hear the teacher's explanation for the variation.
