I've just ordered some of the new Comics for Phonics reading scheme books
www.pearsonschoolsandfecolleges.co.uk/AssetsLibrary/SECTORS/PRIMARYASSETSNEW/Literacy/BugClub/Graphics/ComicsforPhonics/Batmanexamplespreads.pdf
I hope they will be hit especially with some of my boys

I thought you posted that you were thinking of asking if your DD could opt out of phonics when she starts school? I can't be bothered to look up the comment but I am sure it was on the thread I started asking for advice with my niece!

accountantsrule · 17/06/2012 13:09

I decided I could be bothered - not sure if it is ok to do this or not but here goes . .

"I don't know if our school encourages "phonic spelling". But if it does I'm going to discuss not using it with my daughter. I believe that's making life hard for the children. They might as well learn to spell properly right from the start."

learnandsay · 17/06/2012 13:14

And the objection to that statement is what, apart from all spelling is phonic? Because if all spelling is phonic, then all writing is phonic and if all writing is phonic then all reading is phonic.

The point is that all spelling is not phonic. I learned to spell by knowing how words were spelled, not by sounding them out. I learned to spell by recognising the sight of a word not by recognising its sounds. That's spelling but it's certainly not phonic.

learnandsay · 17/06/2012 13:15

Today I check my spelling by judging whether or not I think it looks right. I don't pay any attention to how it would sound.

Those books look great Mrz. I am new to the board, used to be a secondary teacher ten years ago! My eldest is starting school in sept- we have some biff and chip books but I am looking for something like the books you have linked- any tips?
Btw- whether we like phonics or not it will be taught in school however we feel, and it will really affect our kids if we don't support how they learn at school when they are at home. So unless you are going to home school I'd give in if I was you!

accountantsrule · 17/06/2012 13:19

I personally have no objection to anything that is said on these boards as long as they are not rascist or abusive or personally attack people. I also don't have any issue with anything you have said about phonics as its your opinion but I disagree that anyone has been personal about you, they have just disagreed.

You said you didn't say anything about opting out of phonics so I said I believed you had.

You are entitled to your opinion but if no one agrees with you I can't see why you come on these particular threads when they are not actually asking for a phonics - right or wrong discussion.

learnandsay · 17/06/2012 13:23

this isn't about me

learnandsay · 17/06/2012 13:26

Agree, disagree, I don't mind. But address the point and not the person.

veryconfusedatthemoment · 17/06/2012 13:50

MRZ: These look really interesting. Could you please advise what book band level/ranges these are? (DS is on BRP, yr 2 and we are currently on Blue I believe).

Tgger · 17/06/2012 13:59

learnandsay, of course you are entitled to your opinion, freedom of speech is very important. However, I think you must expect people to be critical when you post a silly/critical comment on a thread started by a primary school teacher in order to share "for those interested"- can't get more democratic than that- a fantastic resource.
I actually didn't think it worth commenting on, your comment just comes across as immature IMO.

I don't know if our school encourages "phonic spelling". But if it does I'm going to discuss not using it with my daughter.

Hard to address that point without discussing you, really. That doesn't mean anyone has attacked you personally. But, as I've already said, MN has rules - report posts if you think they have breached them.

learnandsay · 17/06/2012 14:04

Tgger, I'm making a serious point. And as I've said before many times, if people disagree with my argument then it's for them to explain why, not attack me. That's not being critical it's making personal attacks.

learnandsay · 17/06/2012 14:06

Feenie, I'm concerned with this thread, not old posts.

mrz · 17/06/2012 14:07

veryconfusedatthemoment they are from lilac to green book bands but I also purchased some www.pearsonschoolsandfecolleges.co.uk/Primary/Literacy/AllLiteracyresources/RapidPhonics/Try/Try.aspx which are also very appealing (my class like the silly jokes in each book)

Feenie · 17/06/2012 14:09

But you keep popping up on phonics threads to make these comments, that's the point. And you didn't address that particular point at the time, just threw it out there.

There are no personal attacks here or elsewhere - but do report them if you see any. Wink

mrz · 17/06/2012 14:09

Actually learnandsay you brought that self same previous thread to this one in your first post ... is it a different rule for you to everyone else? Hmm

OP posts:
learnandsay · 17/06/2012 14:14

It means the attacks are in this thread, not the previous one.

Feenie · 17/06/2012 14:15
Hmm
Eggrules · 17/06/2012 14:16

mrz Is green ORT stage 4?

mrz · 17/06/2012 14:16

so your post wasn't meant as an attack? Hmm

OP posts:
learnandsay · 17/06/2012 14:19

No it wasn't. I've repeated the argument within the last few posts.

learnandsay · 17/06/2012 14:22

A personal attack, Feenie, is one aimed at the character of the poster and not at his or her argument. If you read this thread carefully you'll see that that applies to several of the replies.

mrz · 17/06/2012 14:23

so what did your first post on this thread have to do with the subject of the thread?

OP posts:
learnandsay · 17/06/2012 14:25

What does that have to do with personal attacks?

Feenie · 17/06/2012 14:29

Not sure MNHQ would agree with you there, learnandsay. Have you reported them yet?
