Yr 2 SATs tests whole class invalidated?

yanbu123456 · 15/06/2012 17:57

We have just been told today that the whole of our yr2 class SATs tests have been invalidated because one child had done one of the tests before out of school.

Why would the whole class' tests then be invalidated not just that child's? Would it be the school's decision?

I know teacher assessments are more important and we will get those and that's what their levels are based on but it seems a shame the children did all these tests for no reason (although you could argue all year 2 children do them for no reason).

Namechanged for this in case any other mum's from our class/ school are reading.

Anyone had this happen? The tests are all out there for 2007 and 2009 so it can't be that unusual a situation.

How did it come to light that a child had done one?

Intrigued.

mrz · 15/06/2012 18:07

Since the test results aren't reported I'm not sure what difference it makes if they are invalidated.
The 2007 & 2009 tests shouldn't be "out there" but I do know at least one "outstanding" school locally who sent them home as homework prior to the test Shock

lifesalongsong · 15/06/2012 18:09

Will you get your own child's result?

I don't understand why this a problem unless you won't be told the result.

yanbu123456 · 15/06/2012 18:10

The child had done the test with a tutor and when he or she saw the test said that they had already done that one with their tutor.

Would it just mean that they are not being reported to the council/ education authority then?

The test results aren't reported anyway

Virgil · 15/06/2012 18:12

They are all on the internet. I had no idea they reused them. Why on earth so they do this? I printed them off for DS1 to look at so that he knew the type of thing to expect and i did think it was strange when he said that he'd seen a question before!

Iamnotminterested · 15/06/2012 18:12

As an aside, I have never been told my DD's actual on-the-day test results in year 2, only the TA.

merryberry · 15/06/2012 18:19

Tutor? year 2? Preserve my sanity.

mrz · 15/06/2012 18:21

Teacher assessment is the main focus for end of Key Stage 1 assessment and reporting and is carried out as part of teaching and learning.

^The statutory National Curriculum tasks and tests must be administered to all eligible children who are working at level 1 or above in reading, writing and mathematics. Tasks and tests are designed to help inform the final teacher assessment judgement reported for each child at the end of Key Stage 1.
If teacher assessment and task and test results differ, the teacher assessment results should be reported, provided the judgement is based on an appropriate range of evidence from work completed in class. Schools are not obliged to report task or test results. However, parents must be allowed access to their child?s results on request.^
There is no requirement to report the levels obtained from the tasks and tests separately.

MerylStrop · 15/06/2012 18:23

What do you mean by invalidated?

Surely it makes no difference, at least not to parents and kids?

Only to school in terms of reaching achievement targets? May affect their ofsted....

I'm sure you could still get your child's mark if you really wanted it, not sure why you would

And indeed, tutors in Year 2. Dear God.

mrz · 15/06/2012 18:25

it doesn't make a ha'p'orth of difference to school achievement targets

MigratingCoconuts · 15/06/2012 18:32

a tutor in year 2 Confused

MerylStrop · 15/06/2012 18:37

does it not?

why does it matter at all then?

mrz · 15/06/2012 18:40

it doesn't matter at all which is what is so odd about the post

lifesalongsong · 15/06/2012 18:51

I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering where the problem is and yes, a tutor in yr 2 ffs.

yanbu123456 · 15/06/2012 20:45

I feel like I'm getting grief here unreasonably.

Firstly note that it's not me that has a tutor for my child. I'm sure they had their reasons.

I'm asking the question in my OP because our children all spent a fair bit of time doing these tests in school and being told about them in the run up to them (which I don't agree with particularly - I think they should not have been aware of them as much as they were made to be) and now we've been told they have been invalidated.

No-one explained what that meant to us hence coming on here to ask.

I might have asked how dc did in the tests out of curiosity though, my child was made to take a test - that wasn't my decision - I'd quite like to know the results.

Also I do not understand why all the class' tests would be invalidated not just that one child's.

It doesn't mean a thing

mrz · 15/06/2012 20:56

your child will still get the level the teacher has assessed

SunflowersSmile · 15/06/2012 21:08

I know of children who have seen papers before due to parents. My ds and most I think have only seen papers at school. I know full well that my ds would sing it to the roof tops if he had done a paper at home that turned up at school- he is gobby and would see no reason not to tell!
I imagine a teacher might be able to tell if a child had seen a paper before if results very different to class work.
However, for some reason my ds has done well in tests as concentrates in the silence. Gets distracted in class. Will be interesting to see how he is assessed.

MerylStrop · 15/06/2012 21:19

I still don't know quite what you mean by "invalidated" in this situation

Obviously if one child has seen the test they might have told another about some of the questions. A bit far-fetched with seven year olds I imagine, but I suppose if they are all being primed for it being a big deal it might happen. Its either test conditions or its not.

Don't they jsut do all those tests pretty much for no reason anyway.....

mrz · 15/06/2012 21:26

the tests are meant to support teachers assessments

MerylStrop · 15/06/2012 21:28

sorry to seem so dense mrsz...!

yanbu123456 · 15/06/2012 21:33

Invalidated was the word in the message from our head teacher. "This incident has invalidated the tests for our current Year 2"

She then went on to say that the teacher has plenty of evidence for her teacher assessments so it's okay.

So I suppose it is okay.

Meryl in Y2 the levels reported are the teachers assessments of work over the whole year and the test results should reflect the teachers assessment
