When do you find out about next year's teacher?

This seems to differ wildly between schools. The one down the road from us has already told their pupils, whereas we wait until the week before we break up. Incidentally, the teachers only find out a few days earlier!

What's so wrong with the potential teacher, if you don't mind me asking? Is the teacher so awful that you couldn't at least wait and see?

I know two teachers who removed their children (my friends) from my class when we were going into year 5. They were the only two children who left, and both the children of teachers. I thought it seemed a bit drastic, tbh, although I absolutely hated the entire of year 5... but I loved year 6.

Teacher - lucky you have schools you like with vacancies!

I too am dreading which teacher DD will get next year. But have rang round and schools I would consider don't have vacancies.

No idea what I'll do if I'm unhappy with her teacher :(

Transition day is 10th July. Guess we find out just before then.

Kids find out at beginning of July - and parents get a meeting on 10th. There is a really thorough induction process this year (for Reception kids going into Y1 specifically) because some children, and parents, had trouble with the jump into infants last year. Plenty of sessions for kids to meet their teacher, first in their own class room then in next year's classroom. And a meeting for parents with new teachers too.

DD's school we never get officially told. but the teachers stay in the same classes usually so it is a known quantity. The children do visits to their new classes when moving from infants to uniors (as different building) but tbh they know all the teachers very well anyway, so it is a non issue. This year DD will keep the same teacher anyway as the other teacher is mum oto one of DD's classmates and school made the decision to not have her as her daughter's class teacher (although she does teach her.)

At the infant school I work at it is announced much closer to the end of the term. the teachers/TAs don;t know until a day or so before at the earliest either. At the moment we still don't know which class we will have next year, not even which year group.

TuftyFinch · 16/06/2012 21:56

DS (reception going to Y1) will have the same teacher as this year and DD starting Reception in September will also have this teacher as they'll be in the same class. There are only 3 teachers/ classes in the school so unless someone leaves I know which teacher they'll have for each of the next 6/7 years.

teacherwith2kids · 16/06/2012 23:07

Indigo,

Part of my problem IS that the schools I like don't have vacancies. And even if they did, my childcare is tied to DD's current school. Even so, I am seriously considering sending her to a much 'worse' (on paper) school IF I can be reassured that the particular teachers she will have are good.

HouseOfCheese · 16/06/2012 23:36

I don't understand why a school would let the children know but not bother informing the parents till later, it's a really bad communication strategy which is designed to start the rumour machine going. Of course at least some of the parents are going to care about who their child's teacher will be, to think otherwise is just daft. Given that, there is no benefit to be gained from withholding the information, surely.

auntevil · 17/06/2012 00:01

House of Cheese - maybe schools think that the children will pass the information on to their parents laughs uncontrollably?

HouseOfCheese · 17/06/2012 00:08

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

I'd probably be reliably informed that Madame Gazelle will be the next lucky custodian of my DCs education Grin

IndigoBell · 17/06/2012 12:22

Teacher - did you get my PM?

Lorelai · 17/06/2012 16:35

Well, DD1 is only just starting in Reception, but I will find out her teacher next Thurs at a Parents' evening. I'm not too worried about the teacher, as I have heard good things about both the Reception teachers, but I am worried about whether she will be in the same class as her best friend - I kind of forgot to send back the form asking which friends from nursery she wanted to be with. But since there is only one other child from her playschool going there, and I'm pretty sure her mother did fill in the form (naming DD1), then fingers crossed it will be ok!

Runoutofideas · 17/06/2012 18:48

DD1 is moving from infants to juniors and we find out her new teacher next week at an open evening for parents. DD1 is going into yr1 and we found out their new teachers just as they broke up for half term.

3duracellbunnies · 17/06/2012 20:29

We found out last week, teacher and class room. By all reports teachers sound good, classrooms are as expected for dd1 and the better of two options for dd2. Bizarely also found out ds's teachers although not yet offered a place in nursery for Jan, assuming he goes there. Bit strange as he still seems like my little baby. Helps me choose which days to request though!
