Because she is only 5, and I am not a big fan of homework for this age group at all.

Had a letter home this week saying please go through stuff with your child for phonics screening.

I don't have some of the "stuff" and not sure that I would do it if I did. But will this disadvantage her? I am a teacher, and she is our 4th, but just can't get worked up about this. But there will be those that do, and this may affect her confidence. She's very bright, so shouldI push her more, or just leave her to read lots which she loves

But she's 5...5fgs!Where can I find this phonics stuff online? Do I really need it?

Schools must inform parents of whether their child has "passed" or not.

I will be glad when next week is over.

Tonight I opened the book bag, saw huge worksheet with phonics to read and spell, closed bag and opened wine.

HouseOfCheese · 17/06/2012 10:56

Our school has informed parents of when the test is, but hasn't done anything other than that. Agree that last minute swotting is a bit pointless, the skills they need are surely more complex than anything which can be crammed into a weekend with parents at home?

HouseOfCheese · 17/06/2012 10:58

Having said that I have no idea whether they are doing anything extra in class. My DC hasn't mentioned it at all.

learnandsay · 17/06/2012 11:14

Since the test is to find out how well schools are teaching phonics it's a bit of a cheek to ask parents to prime the children. It trying to defeat the purpose of the test.

The check is to show what children know and which children need extra support putting in place before Y2.

What is the Year 1 phonics screening check?

The Year 1 phonics screening check is a short, light-touch assessment to confirm whether individual pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard.

It will identify the children who need extra help so they are given support by their school to improve their reading skills. They will then be able to retake the check so that schools can track pupils until they are able to decode.
dangerousliaison · 17/06/2012 11:25

we have been adviced to prepare, I have not my dd can decode if she fails on the day then so beit. the threshold is pretty high leaving no room for minor error or laps of consentration anyway so Im in no way concerned about it.

dangerousliaison · 17/06/2012 11:30

you will only know if child has pass or fail no score will be given, the threshold is prbably 34 out of 40.

mrz · 17/06/2012 11:41

We haven't practised or asked parents to practise (not one has even asked about the check) we want an accurate picture of what our children can do.

breadandbutterfly · 17/06/2012 11:44

Yes, my ds's school has asked us to do a bit of practice at home. Bit cheeky - if they'd been teaching them properly since they started, no extra practice would be needed.

My ds is about a year behind his sisters at the same age in reading - partly my fault (i've not done as much reading with him as them), partly he's had much poorer teachers. Think his natural abilities are pretty much identical.

I know thay did a practice test a few week's back, as he had a sticker and told me it was for reading lots of words incl some nonsense ones. No idea if the sticker meant he passed or just tried hard. Not my problem - hope it motivates the teachers to focus on phonics as his teaching has been a bit haphazrd.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 17/06/2012 12:39

i would be jittery about the test if i were teaching y1 still and i would have been doing the proper phonics. that is just my perssonality.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 17/06/2012 12:43

posting in small chunks as ds is trying to add awhole load of nopnsense words himself!

I have been practising with dd, but not for the test specifically. she is a very strong sight reader and quite lazy at using phonics. we have been practising area of weakness.

with ds I would not do any cramming as i would want them to know he needed support. (it looks like he might)

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 17/06/2012 12:47

we had a letter about the test but no indiction of what to practise we were given some sounds to practise at parents evening in feb.

Fairenuff · 17/06/2012 14:39

I work in Year 1.

We teach phonics every day in our phonics lesson and children apply the phonics they have been taught in all their writing (literacy, topic, re, etc.)

We do phonics assessments for every child at least once a term and know exactly where each child is at the moment.

We are not doing any preparation for the phonic assessments and have not asked parents to either.

We do not anticipate any surprises, we are already aware of which children need extra support and we are already providing that.

The children should not even realise anything different is going on, they will be used to decoding real and 'alien' words and the test will only take a few minutes.
