Should I be doing something?

Just received DS's end of year report for grade 3, Which he got 4c's across the board. After looking on here I believe its quite a good mark?
We don't tutor him, Do extra work at home etc He does his homework that takes about 10 minutes a day and thats about it. He is a prolific reader though.
The question really is....
I've read so many threads on tutoring and helping your child and feeling kind of guilty that I don't. Should I be? If yes then what?
We are serial movers living abroad that move country every 2-3 years. Sometimes to areas that only have one school so can't go looking for one with good reputation as we just take whats available.

No, just keep on supporting him as you are doing already. He sounds fine.

We did extra stuff with our DCs because their primary school wasn't academic. Hence no homework.

From the sound of it, your school, what with the daily 10min homework, is challenging your DC. If I was you, I'd be happy with things as they are.

If nearer to Year 6 you want your DC to take a common entrance exam then yes, tutoring should be considered. But for the time being your DC is coming along nicely.

I honestly think if you put too much pressure on primary age children it can lead to academic burn out. School plus 10 mins homework and enjoying reading sounds ideal to me.

Hi Expatbrat:

It sounds like your DS is doing really well so whatever you are doing is working. It may be that simply providing a snack and a quiet place to read/ do homework and encouraging him to take up extra opportunities when and where possible is already so much a part of your lives, that you just don't realise how unusual that can be in many families (especially with both parents working).

I think what you should start to focus on is where next? What is the senior school situation in your area? I ask this because it may be that during Y5 the best solution in your area may be to sit the 11+ grammar/ independent school entrance exams. In which case you may (I stress MAY) which to consider finding out more about what you should be doing to prepare for that. I'm only just starting to explore this myself - but it ranges from tutors (which can be expensive) to on-line practice to buying practice books from bookshops and doing it yourself at home.

But well done you & your DS - Solid Level 4 work in Y3 is excellent when you consider that Level 4 is the notional performance for the 'average' Y6 pupil.

Thanks all,
Given it some thought today and guess we'll just keep going the way we are. Going with "If it aint broke don't fix it"
