Hi, I have two dc in primary education. One in year 3 one in year 5 and I am a little confused about recent events!

Dc1 was recently pulled in by his teacher and told that she was very pleased that he is now working at level 4a . He has previously been trying to hide his ability from class mates being worried about being seen as a swot. He came home and, privately, told me about this. I was really pleased as he has been working hard and it seems the teacher is telling him he is now working at the average/good level as he is capable of.

However dc2 was then pulled in and told she is working at about a 4c with elements of level 5 in her written work. This is obviously great and I am pleased for her but it has thrown me into confusion! I had been led to believe that both dc were average to good in their classes (pre should be in the case of dc1) so how can they be at similar standard two years apart? Is dc1 behind, is dc2 ahead, should I be doing something for either/both of them? The school has given me no guidance.and I confess I am clueless about these levels!

A 4c and a 4a are a year apart. And your kids are 2 years apart.

They are both doing well. Your youngest is doing better (at the moment) than your oldest. But they are both doing very well.

Ok so they are both doing well then and I have nothing to stress about? Thank goodness for that! I am so confused with the while thing - mostly because I don't like the whole system of sats and levels etc, is it right that they do a level 6 paper in year 6?. I do wish they would just go back to yes x is doing great, probably needs something to stretch them and y is struggling, could do with a boost... But I am too old Grin

Thank you everyone I feel a lot less worked up now! Smile

My DD2 is year 7 and is between 4c and 5c depending on the subject. DD3 is year 5 and is level 5 on all her subjects.
DS2 is year 2 and is between 3b and 4c for his levels.
Can anybody help me decipher this?

A child is supposed to leave Year 6 at Level 4. However, a kid going into a selective secondary school would be expected to be at least Level 5 (or higher if they had extra tuition).

So if DD2 is coming to the end of Year 7 then his levels makes him average whereas DD3 and DS2 are ahead of mine at that age and they are currently at very selective schools. By that reckoning DD3 and DS2 are very, very bright :)

Thanks verity. I did hear something about a level 6 paper and start thinking dc1 is behind if they need to hit that but if it just an extra then that is fine. The school are very good with the dc - but terrible at communicating what is going on! I suppose it is a fine line they walk between apathetic and pushy parents with no real way of telling who will be what!

I don't have any experience of other schools but I am surprised at the lack oh info tbh. Although it is great that I can I shouldn't really have to be asking on the internet for this euphoria i? Maybe I am expecting too much!

Ok so next question dc1 works hard for his grades which is fab. I am concerned though that dd seems to coast. How is she supposed to learn to apply herself when things get rough (as. I am sure it will eventually, she has a long way to go!) if she can currently coast into good levels? Confused

Euphoria should be should I? I think... Blooming phone!

Ok great, she just seems to find everything easy. Her homework takes 5 minutes and she will discuss her brothers with him when he has some. I have been wondering if it is normal for homework to he so meh! However if she is stretched in school that helps. I just worry about her learning certain skills like persistence and determination in the face of challenge!

No you are right it isn't. Thank you, am feeling far happier about it all now. I will have a chat and see where we go from there :)

My year 5 dd (march birthday) is working at a 5c with the odd 5b. I'm not sure what she was in year 3 but a level 4 is excellent.

Iamnotminterested · 14/06/2012 16:53

OP "Level 4c with elements of level 5 in her work".

That doesn't make sense to me.

LowRegNumber · 14/06/2012 20:10

In her written work. I actually meant she has pieces of written work at level 5 but isn't consistent yet if that makes sense? I didn't explain well, sorry!

Unnamed, it sounds like your dd is doing really well as well then? I am pleased to find she is doing well, now we just need to work on her general scatterbrained approach to life and her tendency to talk the hind leg off any donkey silly enough to stand still for more than a second Grin
