Lady Eleanor Holles 7+ Entry Requirements

Hi all

I am just starting to think about whether to move my dd from her (non selective) private mixed primary to a school that goes all the way through to 18, to try to minimise the trauma at 11+, as a friend suggested that entry at 7+ might be easier (or at least give a second chance at 11+). The school I have my heart set on is LEH, but I can't find any information on what the entrance requirements are for 7+. I really want to know whether all the children who get in have tutoring...because although I'm looking at Sep 2014 entry I suspect starting tutoring early next year would be sensible if it's needed. Her current school is not the sort of school that is used to children leaving at 7+ so wouldn't be helping (or told about it I suspect until it was decided).

If anyone has any information about this I'd love to hear it.

Thanks a million

Hello everyone,

I have got an appointment for the LEH Open Event.I would like to know if I should take my daughter with me for the event.Since this is not an Open Day I have this doubt.

Thanx a lot

No definitely don't take your dd to the parents open event. There is a "girls" open event every Autumn on a Saturday, lots of pupils in attendance to chat to them and show them around, answer questions etc. It's great fun for them.

Re J&J - my understanding (and I know a no of local parents there personally) was that this year, they got a very similar number of girls in as they usually do, but it was a very big year group, so more than usual sat.

Also, the parents don't seem to be as singularly focused on -LEH juniors or nothing- as J&J parents 4/5yrs ago. Whilst it's still a popular choice, lots of families preferring Surbiton, Bute or Notting Hill & Ealing as 1st choice, or even local co-ed alternatives (all fabulous schools) so you shouldn't read so much into the "less got offered a place at LEH this yr" thread - to my mind it's misleading.

Thank you very much for your help sybilwibble.

Hello everyone,

My dd is going for the LEH 7+ exams in January. From all the previous discussions I understand that there are mixed opinions about having "Tutors" for 7+ exams.I haven't come to a decision yet.

Can anybody suggest me good tutors around Kingston or Wimbledon please???Thank you in advance for all your help.

Slightly off topic but just to point out as I don't think it's been mentioned before on the thread- being in the prep school does NOT give you any more right to a senior school place than an external candidate for the senior school; everyone wanting a senior place must sit the 11+, current prep students included. I have a number of friends who went to LEH or have girls there now, and know a good few who passed the 7+, attended the prep school then failed the 11+ and had to go elsewhere for secondary. Don't assume that just because you got in on the 7+ you'll be progressing into the senior school.

ValentineWiggins · 02/06/2013 19:03

That is not what we were told. We were told (at the open day by the head) that at the start of year 5 you are told whether you definitely have a place in the senior school or not. According to the deputy head that would normally be around 40 of the 45 or so in the year. If not you can choose to sit the exam at which point you are guaranteed an interview.

MSG55 · 02/06/2013 19:11

Thank you InViennaWeWerePoetry. You are very correct,we were clearly explained about this by the head when we went for the Open Event. She told us that parents will be informed about their children's ability before sitting the 11+, its the parents discretion to proceed. And even if those girls get through the exams there will be more struggle for them to cope.

sybilwibble · 02/06/2013 21:56

InVienna - that's not quite correct. The majority of girls get given entry to senior school without having to sit the external 11+ exams, based on the school's stringent year five testing, but you're right to assume there is no automatic entry from one to the other. Those who don't reach the high bar set do not get given that access pass/letter and then can sit the external tests if they so wish to do so.

Please could I ask what kind of private tutoring is available and where to get the information from.......thanks in advance for all the help!!!!!
We do not want to stress our little one but don't know what's the right balance????

hardworkismum · 12/09/2013 13:55

Hi, my first post so apologies if i don't do things right.

My daughter went to LEH juniors and is currently in the seniors. I would really say that if LEH is the school you have your heart set on then juniors is the way to go. From the beginnning of their LEH journey the girls are assessed. If they are in the middle upwards in their class they will be offered a seat in the seniors for sure. Out of our year group only one girl was not offered a place.
This system of allowing junior girls through has been in place for about four years now and more and more of the school are following this system. In the beginning of year 5 if your daughter is borderline about being offered a place at seniors then you shall be informed. This is your time to think hard about your next step. You may choose to tutor and bring up the grades for the final decision in late June.
But i must stress again that the juniors is definitely the way in if you have your heartr set on seniors. There are four classes of 26 students each in the seniors. If almost 40-50% of capacity is the old girls its makes it so much tougher for external students.

hope this was of use to at least one person!

Hi, Im also new on here and it is my first ever post, but just wanted to add that my daughter has just started the juniors this year and is loving it. I have heard it can be very competitive to gain a place but if your daughter has natural academic ability then there is no need to worry. My daughter came from an average state school but was working beyond everyone in her class which was why i chose LEH. She had no tutoring and no stress about the exam. I just told her to try her hardest and if she did get in then I know that i was correct in thinking her current school is not benefiting her at all. If not then that is fine. She passed the test and interview with flying colours, and so far is loving being there, has made friends and enjoys the work she does and homeowork she gets. I believe that if the child is struggling to get in, chances are they will struggle while there too which isnt fair on the child. Workbooks ares a good way to go and i have been doing them with my daughter since a very young age which is probably why she was doing so well in school. But i did not fork out on private tutoring.

I so far have found LEH to be a wonderful school and the teachers seem nice yet firm which is always good. They are very aproachable. If you have any queries i suggest you email the junior dept that way you know the information is correct as sometimes what you read online is not always correct or is outdated.

Good luck.

Could anybody please tell me what do they expect when they interview the girls?
Do we need to prepare them in certain topics?

smilesandballet · 13/10/2018 21:13

I know this is an old thread but v interesting- my dd is now at seniors and was at juniors during what we call the ‘Jack And Jill era’. She came from a state school and did one bond paper a night leading up to the exam. Turned out she was one of the highest scoring on entrance test and sailed through, with many j and j girls falling behind and eventually leaving. They have a knack for finding the most genuinely talented girls (not boasting, there were others in our situation) so thought this might be interesting. LEH is fab, dd is v happy and manages to balance everything very well atm xxx

bangaru123 · 13/01/2020 22:04

I am looking for suggestions or details how LEH group activity process works for 7+. My daughter selected for group activity but I dont have any clue. She was not tutored and her current school had no idea about LEH as we live in EAST London.
Any details around group activity for 7+ would be really helpful.
Thanks
