DS 6yr is in yr1 and has always struggled with his writing. He has hypermobility and core strength issues making it harder for him to hold pen and form the letters. That aside, his teachers have been concerned lately about his lack of concentration and engagement during school particularly during writing sessions. They say he does not write much in half an hour whereas other kids in his group are writing a lot more sentances. He just sits there not writing anything much.
When I asked him about it he felt he was doing what the teacher's had asked him to do. He said sometimes he doesn't write something as he didn't know if what he was writing was correct. I discussed this with the teachers again and we agreed that he wouldn't be left for 20mins without intervention and would be given extra encouragement as and when needed.
I'm not sure if this is happening as yesterday in his book bag was his literacy book with a note asking me to finish off story in class which he didn't do in class at home. I don't understand how making me do it with him at home is going to help address the root cause of the problem which is they can't get him to produce this work at school. I will shave to speak to teacher about this as it seems like a bit of cop out. Any ideas/strategies of what I can do instead to help him focus at school? Thanks
