School Trip With a Fractured Hand ???

Not really sure where to put this, so hoping here's okay - I'm hoping for replies from Teachers or maybe other Mums who've had a similar problem

My DD has her first away from home for several nights school trip just after the School holidays - she is beside herself with excitement & cannot wait to go back to school & nags me every minute to sort out her stuff for itHmmGrin & goes on & on about looking forward to activities such as swimming & rock climbingShock

BUT She had a sports accident at the end of the last day of term, being her stupidly brave & stoic self, the School knew she'd hurt herself but thought it was minor as she didn't make a big fuss - turns out she's fractured a bone in her right hand on top of a sprained wrist & is now in a splint & needing regular pain killers :(

SO, I'm half expecting that due to this injury & H&S rules, she now isn't going to be allowed to go, she certainly can't swim or rock climb:(

At the moment I've not told her my fears, poor mite has had enough to cope with this week :( but I'm playing it as "lets just wait & see" but feeling really sad for her & also worrying that perhaps I should be preparing her for the worstConfused

Would anyone know how these things work ??? Will H&S rules mean she can't now go ??

This is a 3 night away lodge type camping trip, educational, but also fun activities too - I do know one DC is only allowed to go for the first day & is been driven back to School as he has SN & its considered too dangerous for them to stay overnight, hence why I'm expecting similar for DD

TIA :)

My DD went to the US for five nights with a fractured elbow in March. She was wearing a sling and was still taking very regular pain relief.

Brilliant hungryhippo thats good news :)

  • did you need to have prescription pain killers to give to the School or were they okay with your DD taking her own, or staff giving her OTC pain killers - ATM DD is taking OTC but I can arrange a script with our GP, but would be better doing it this week as may not be enough time next week

When DS1 was 11 he fell off the monkey bars in the park and broke his elbow (in the April). He was due to go on his residential - zip wiring, rock climbing, go karts etc etc in the June. The hospital said it was not safe for him to go. I was so Sad for him. He needed physio and we had to go every week up until the August.

Can't see why she couldn't go. Obviously would have to the photographer for the rock climbing, and play everything by ear.

Dd3 broke her arm 2 weeks before a Kingswood week in yr6. I went in to see the teachers and we went through all the activities on offer and out of 24 there was only 2 she couldn't do - swimming and another water-based one iirc. She managed the abseiling and everything else. We even bought some lurex socks that she could wear over the plaster at the discos! The staff at school and centre were brilliant.

Brilliant - not your DCs injuring themselves of course :)

but sounds like its the norm for schools to let them go anyway - DD is managing really well, so I'm sure she'll be fine I was just worrying that she'd get back to school & they'd say she couldn't go, so great news

& thanks lee great idea about a sparkly cover for her splint :)

Really :( for your DS1 Bella thats what I was dreading, but sounds like his injury was much worse - I did the same myself as a DC, so I know it is :(

I hope your DD gets to go rockin. I think it is so important for every child to experience a trip like this and to be able to "manage relationships" with other students and learn how to share a room and take turns with the bathroom and stuff.

I felt so sorry for DS as when they had their leavers assembly on the last day of yr6, they have to say what their most memorable moment is (I did not know at the time this would happen) and I felt so Sad for DS when every single child said the residential.

We lost our deposit even though we had provided medical evidence and did not get the balance of the trip back until the Sept.

However, DS2 got to go and he thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

Although a bit older, my dd went to Berlin with her foot in an inflatable boot due to stress fracture. School are fine about it.

Just as an update :)

The school have agreed DD can go on the trip :) - seems its not covered by the same H&S nonsense that blights so much else these days rules as school itself as comes under a different LA, which has meant the head could make a decision based on the nature of the injury & how sensible DD is in coping with her injury - she was whooping like you wouldn't believe when she got the news Grin - I needed to write a letter giving them permission to give her pain pills, but otherwise all straight forward - she'salso taken a decent camera with her, as I thought appointing her as class photographer would make her feel less left out with the activities she can't do - her teacher things thats a good idea too, so is going to encourage her :)

Though having just waved her off - stubborn moo was insisting on dragging her own bag up a big hill & when I turned my back for a second she's switched to using her bad handShock so she went off on her travels in a strop with me :( as I told her off & pointed out to the trip staff what she should & shouldn't be doing with her hand - I'm spoiling her fun & fussing too much apparentlyHmm - & I now feel really miserable as after all my hard work organising her stuff, I didn't even get a smile when she left - bloody kidsGrin

Yay! Fab outcome.

Many a time I have dropped DS (15 today) at school for a trip and he justs gets out of the car whilst I am in the midst of leaning over to give him a kiss and I end up kissing bloody fresh air! And there are definitely no smiles....
