How do I explain to DD how to decode...

Words like treasure, measure etc. She's not happy with my "oh that's just one you have to remember" explanation that worked perfectly well for my older kids when we come across words that I don't know how to sound out. She's quite cross at the idea and has told me "every word can be sounded out if you know the rules"... So can someone give me the method for getting the "s" in these words to sound as a "sh". Sure it's pretty obvious but I can't work it out at the time of the morning!

You could print this for her? Treasure is right at the end. 'ea' as in head, is also on it.

I get away with all sorts of vague explanations - usually "i think we nicked that word from another country!". Still, she'll probably be a great little speller.

The 'ea' as in 'bread' and the 'zh' as in 'television' is taught in y1 usually (phase 5 if school is doing Letters and Sounds). The 'ure' sound is taught in yr (phase 3). So tell her 'treasure' etc can be perfectly decoded! Grin
