School uniform for DD - How much/little to buy

DD starts YR this September. She's spent most of her life at childminder/nursery/preschool and does a good amount of crafts/art/outdoor playing. Yet it's rare she's needed a change of clothing. She's a bit of a neat-freak and rarely comes home dirty. As a family we do three clothes washes a week. With this in mind, how many school dresses/skirts/polo shirts/sweatshirts do you think I'd need to buy for her?

Sorry, hit post too soon. I was thinking two dresses (Summer), one skirt (Winter), one logo sweatshirt, three polo shirts. What do you suggesta.

I would say two skirts/ trousers 2 jumpers and 3 polos. It's not just your own child you have to account for but the other kids dripping paint etc on them

Also at school previously perfect eaters suddenly get their lunch all down them due to them having to rush so much.

LadySybildeChocolate · 31/05/2012 21:22

I buy three of each: shirt, trousers, jumper. Then I'm not washing every night. Smile

Bert2e · 31/05/2012 21:25

3 polos, 2 (skirts / pinafores / trousers) and 2 jumpers / cardigans. Then 2 summer dresses.

3duracellbunnies · 31/05/2012 21:27

If a pinafore is on the list and she'll wear it, I would get one plus the skirt for pe day. The pinafore protects the polo shirt, not as important if it is a shop polo shirt as they seem to be about 2.50 for 2, but at 6 quid a logoed polo shirt, protection from white board markers is a must!

HandMadeTail · 31/05/2012 21:29

3 or 4 summer dresses and shirts or polos. Two skirts or trousers. Two sweaters or cardigans.

That is, at least 3 of anything you wear only once, two of the things you can get two or three days out of.

wedoNOTdothat · 31/05/2012 21:30

No! 5 polos. Dd came home covered in black paint this week, black paint!!! I know they're only little but fgs it was everywhere even in her ears. And she is neat and tidy.

5 polos, 2 dresses/trousers, 2 jumpers/cardies. Don't even get me started on school tights..

SizzleSazz · 31/05/2012 21:32

2 polos, 2 skirts/pinafores, 2 summer dresses, 2 cardies.

blueglue · 31/05/2012 21:33

You'll need more than one skirt IMO unless you are prepared to do a wash and be able to get it dry for the next day if it unexpectedly comes back dirty.

I always buy a smallish quantity of uniform and buy spares that are too big. That way, they never go without uniform and the spares will in time fit and no longer be spares. At which point, you buy even bigger spares Grin.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 31/05/2012 21:34

supermarket polos come in packs of 3 for about 2 quid, so get two packs, and you'll have a couple spare to keep for best.
2 skirts, 2 jumpers, 2 summer dresses - last autumn was really warm, and so i was quite glad I'd picked up a couple of dresses half a size too big in the sales.

blueglue · 31/05/2012 21:35

But I do know people who just have 5 of everything - clean on every day and then a massive load of washing at the weekend.

TheProvincialLady · 31/05/2012 21:38

I am astonshed that you only do 3 washes a week. I do that most days, more at the weekends.

DS1 has 5 of everything - trousers/shorts, polo shirts, jumpers. He reuses trousers and jumpers if they remain clean (rare) but always has a fresh polo shirt on. Then I wash and iron the lot at the weekend, so there is never any worry about there being clean uniform.

jubilee10 · 31/05/2012 21:39

We have five of everything! But ds is at after school club until 6pm and they don't come more messy than him! I have bought eight logo polo shirts this year. Shock

eragon · 31/05/2012 21:43

3 washes a week! oh i am so jealous! 4x a day here!!

spiderlight · 31/05/2012 21:44

Five polo shirts and three of everything else. Three is the magic number because then you can wash Monday's and Tuesday's on Wednesday ready for Thursday and Friday. Our school also requires one full set of uniform to be kept at school as a spare.

BsshBossh · 31/05/2012 21:51

3 clothes washes a week, then on top of that 1 bedding wash and 1 towel wash. 7kg capacity washing machine. Family of 3. Grin.

Okay, so very good points about other children dropping paint etc on her, and rushed eating = dropped food. I will definitely buy more than I thought.

Thanks all!

My DD often needed a change of uniform after breakfast, due to cereal spillage.... Hmm. If you've got a neat child you're lucky!

ILoveOnionRings · 31/05/2012 21:51

I agree with Spiderlight and not to buy the summer dresses until the summer as they grow so quickly.

The first year is always expensive but then you just need to top up as you go along. Also I would suggest to try and go for slightly bigger with the polos as they are usually tucked in or under a jumper or dress.

Floggingmolly · 31/05/2012 22:01

Three of each as an absolute minimum - one on, one off, and one in the wash. Less stress all round Smile

MegBusset · 31/05/2012 22:20

DS1 has four tops (three T-shirts, one polo shirt), two sweatshirts, one pair of shorts (must buy another actually) and two pairs of trousers. I do a wash pretty much every day and he needs new clothes most days, particularly since we changed to 100% cotton trousers without the dirt-proof coating!

He's not allowed to get dressed until after breakfast Grin

RueDeWakening · 31/05/2012 22:37

DD gets dressed after breakfast in the morning, which helps :o

She has 2 pairs trousers, 5 polo shirts, 4 jumpers, 2 summer dresses. Of those, 3 polos, 2 trousers & 2 jumpers were bought new. The others, I paid 50p each for at the 2nd hand uniform sale the PSA run every month.

In fact today I bought a school fleece, pinafore dress & summer dress all for year 1, total £2 - I love our PSA :o definitely recommend finding out if there's anything similar at your DD's school.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 31/05/2012 22:45

I bought DD one pinafore, one skirt and one pair of trousers, 6 polo shirts (2 x pack of 3), one cardigan and one jumper. No summer dresses until Easter as they only wear them for about the first fortnight of the Autumn term and will probably be outgrown by Easter.

They do get paint on their backs and shoulders from other people waving brushes about, walking past with wet paintings etc. Trousers are good for winter PE days if your DD might struggle to get tights back on by herself.

Squinty · 31/05/2012 22:48

i bought two pinafores which she got lots of wear out of. Also had a hand-me-on which came in useful once or twice. I had several polo shirts - 3 or 4 needed i think. 2 or 3 cardis / jumpers.

Summer dresses ime seem to only last one day - come back filthy. So have 3 here..

butthatsnotfair · 01/06/2012 00:17

DD has 4 summer dresses, 2 winter dresses, 2 skirts, 1 pair of trousers. Endless polo shirts, socks and tights and 3 jumpers.
She needs a completely fresh uniform every day because she comes home covered in her lunch, mud, grass, felt tip, paint, glue, she even had straw in her hair the other day Hmm
