CGP work/study books?

I am looking for workbooks for dd to work on maths over the summer between ks1 and 2. The cgp ones seem to be good because they explain the concept rather than just ask questions.

Anybody used them? I used the gcse ones back in the day and they were great but for this stage I'm not sure.

Any alternative recommendations also gratefully received. But ones that explain concepts as well as lists of questions.

Thanks.

I have used the Carol Vordermann Maths Made Easy at this stage. They are divided into age groups so end of KS1 would be aged 6/7 and have 2 levels Beginner and Advanced. The beginner is for the average child and advanced for higher ability children. They explain the concepts involved clearly and contain practice questions and reward stickers. HTH

Crazymum thanks. Would the 6 to 7 one cover level 3 stuff? Because dd is at least a solid 2a.

If you are looking for level 3 work the advanced book would be the one to choose.

I have found CGP books very useful. They have a wide variety and they used them in the school my son attended.
Also have a look in WH Smith - they usually have several to choose from including Carol Vordermann's.
Alternatively, or in addition, a Maths computer program is usually more popular with children than a workbook.

Have you considered Kumon if you can afford it? - and if you have time to do the marking! Good for reinforcing & practising number skills.

I bought the CPG ones for DD and she really likes them (Reception/KS1). Most of my friends and family are teachers and they rate them.

OP Have PM'd you.

Greenwing ; Kumon - really??

Crazymum I have ordered a couple to see what I think of carol vordermans they did look good on amazon.

Greenwing we have no issues with number skills so its just a case of building on what she's done. She much prefers the book format to computers which really surprised me.

Sue the cgp ones got me tthrough my gcse's but I was concerned they were maybe a bit busy for this age so it is good to know you rate them.

INterested I did get your message and thanks for that. I didn't have a chance to get into town yet and I really want to see the whsmith ones before I buy them but I needed something for half term to tide her over. I really appreciate your recommendations and advice.

I've ordered a few CGP ones having looked at loads.CV waaaay too dry, others too cartoony and don't focus on skills they're doing in school.

I like the way CGP break it down for year groups and seem far more linked to what they do in school rather than what some big publishing house thinks they do.

I've not been teaching for 8 years though so no expert. They just seemed to tick all our boxes. Haven't really got into them yet though, they're to keep the cogs working over the summer hols.

Have you looked at the "Challenge" books from WHS. For an able child you could use the book for the year he/she is in as a warm up and do the same topic in the one for the higher year to make things a bit more challenging.

If you like thses books I would rcmnd you get these in the shop. The online WHS service is likely to send the wrong book and I know from experience that they are not helpful at putting things right.

Jinx they have been recommended to me ax someone else too. When the kids are back at school I'll have to trek to town and check them out.

I did order some of the carol vorderman ones from Amazon and they seem quite good and challenging. Though I think the explanation is a bit too brief on each principle. I'd definitely have to explain further they couldn't just get on with it.

My DCs both quite like workbooks and I like the Carol Vorderman ones. They cover a lot of ground and have helped my DD by giving her more confidence in maths. Also the bond revision ones showed up the areas where my DS was weak very quickly, so we could concentrate on those.

DD1 has been revising her KS3 maths from a CGP book. she really likes it. (Just as well as between us we've lost her old books Blush )

The covers look very dull, so I avoid them at primary, but actually inside its colourful and really clear.
